Presiding bishop calls for prayers for Iraq, Middle East
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has urged Episcopalians to observe Sunday, August 17, as a day of prayer for those in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East living in fear of their lives, livelihoods, and ways of living and believing. Her call for prayer is in response to violence in Iraq that has included the slaying of Christians, Yazidis, and other Iraqi religious minorities; the destruction and looting of churches, homes, and places of business; and the displacement of thousands under the threat of death. "Pray that all God's children might live in hope of the world of peace for which we were created," she said.
The following collect, which may be used as part of the Prayers of the People or elsewhere in the liturgy, appears on page 815 of the Book of Common Prayer:
Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
Questions about how best to support the Christian community of Iraq may be directed to the Rev. Canon Robert Edmunds, Middle East Partnership Officer for the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society, at redmunds@episcopalchurch.org.

Filipino Convocation meets in L.A.
The Filipino Convocation of Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries met Aug. 8 - 10 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, with a closing Eucharist at Holy Trinity & St. Benedict's Church in Alhambra. Bishop Suffragan Diane Bruce hosted the convocation and led the opening worship. The group, under the leadership of its convener, the Rev. Leonard Oakes, attended workshops on ministry in the digital age, community development, social media and the relationship between the Philippine Independent Church and the Episcopal Church in the Philippines. According to the Rev. Fred Vergara, Asian-American Ministries officer for the Episcopal Church, who attended the meeting, EAM has six ethnic convocations -- Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian and South Asian -- which meet separately each year, but gather together every third year; the next general meeting will be in Seoul, Korea, in 2015. The Korean convocation also met earlier this year at the Cathedral Center.
Service in Navajoland Seven teenagers from St. Stephen's Church, Santa Clarita, spent the last week of July in the Episcopal Diocese of Navajoland, a missionary diocese that covers portions of the Navajo reservation in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. The teens and their leaders, who included St. Stephen's Rector Kelly O'Connell, at first painted window frames and sills at St. Michael's Church in Upper Fruitland, New Mexico, then set to work at All Saints Church in Farmington, N.M., to varnish wood walls, paint, clear brush, and clearing lumber and concrete from earlier demolition of a small building. Their projects were slightly delayed, according to O'Connell, by two squirrels that had taken up residence in the dumpster, but the critters were (gently) cleared out in good time, the work proceeded, and the workers returned home at the end of the week, tired but proud of their accomplishments.

Remembering Robin Williams, Episcopalian As the world mourned the death on Aug. 11 of actor-comedian Robin Williams, Episcopalians were remembering him as one of their own. For those who have not already seen Williams' tongue-in-cheek list of "Top Ten Reasons to Be An Episcopalian" (as enumerated some years ago on one of his HBO comedy specials), The Episcopal News shares them here:
10. No snake handling. 9. You can believe in dinosaurs. 8. Male and female God created them; male and female we ordain them. 7. You don't have to check your brains at the door. 6. Pew aerobics. 5. Church year is color-coded. 4. Free wine on Sunday. 3. All of the pageantry, none of the guilt. 2. You don't have to know how to swim to get baptized. 1. No matter what you believe, there's bound to be at least one other Episcopalian who agrees with you.
On a more serious note; since Williams' death many church members have called for better understanding and care for those who suffer from the kind of depression that may have triggered his suicide. Resources are available through the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 800.273.8255 or www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org.
