Local priest witnesses historic signature at the White House At a White House ceremony on July 21, President Barack Obama signed an executive order intended to prevent workplace discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people employed by the federal government and all companies that receive a contract from the federal government. "I'm going to do what I can, with the authority I have, to act," said Obama. "The rest of you, of course, need to keep putting pressure on Congress to pass federal legislation that resolves this problem once and for all." "Amen!" came a voice from the invited audience of LGBT activists and supporters gathered from across the nation to witness the signing. "Amen. Amen," the president responded as the audience applauded. "Got the "amen" corner here," he continued, laughing. "You don't want to get me preaching, now." The "Amen" came from the Rev. Canon Susan Russell, associate priest at All Saints Church, Pasadena, and a longtime activist for marriage equality and LGBT rights. Russell and the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay man to be elected a bishop in the Episcopal Church, were among several Episcopal representatives invited to be present. "Yes. That was me. I just couldn't help myself," Russell later wrote in her regular column on Huffington Post as she reflected on the historic occasion. A video of the July 21 signing ceremony is here. Above left: Russell and Robinson meet the Obamas' dog, Sunny, who was out for a walk on the White House grounds.

Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool, front center, visited St. Mary's Church, Lompoc, on July 20 to send a team of young people and their adult leaders off to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for the diocese's annual Red Shirt Project mission trip. Twenty young people from around the diocese, and two from Minnesota, will live, work and learn with the Lakota-Sioux residents through Aug. 6. "We are putting together a one-day powwow in the village the first weekend we are there," says group leader Michael Cunningham, rector of St. Mary's (back row center). "We also are repairing and repainting the church door - red, of course." The group also will clean and weed the graveyard and repair the community baseball field. "Our focus is on leadership training among the youth," explains Cunningham, who has led the group every year along with the Rev. Canon Robert Two Bulls, formerly a priest of the Diocese of Los Angeles and now missioner of the Department of Indian Work and Multicultural Ministries for the Diocese of Minnesota and vicar of All Saints Indian Mission in Minneapolis.
