Echo Park Lake
Lotus at Echo park Lake All are invited for July 4 walking meditation at Echo Park Lake
People of all faiths are invited to share in a one-hour walking meditation around Echo Park Lake at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 4, focusing on a theme of interdependence.

While completing the 0.9-mile path, participants will stop at six stations for reflection and prayers offered in six faith traditions: Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Baha'i. Participants are also invited to observe silent meditation and prayer while walking between the stations. The path borders the recently restored beds of lotus flowers, traditional symbols of enlightenment in several faiths.

"The walk promises to be a meaningful declaration of interdependence," said Bob Williams, diocesan canon for community relations, who is among event hosts and planners. "Gathering on July 4 is also significant as an expression of thanksgiving for religious freedoms afforded within our nation."

Walking meditation - a form of active prayer common to many faith traditions - offers a chance to focus on shared experiences of harmony and pilgrimage, Williams said.

The walk will begin promptly at 11 a.m., beginning near the steps to the boathouse, a familiar landmark in Echo Park.

Free parking will be available at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, until the lots are filled, and on the adjacent streets.

The event is sponsored by the recently launched Interfaith Coalition of Southern California, an emerging alliance of interreligious organizations engaged in strategic planning for common cause. More information is available from Williams at 213.308.0222 or rwilliams@ladiocese.org.

Pilgrimage takes youth to city streets
Seven teenagers from various congregations of the Diocese of Los Angeles came together June 16-20 for a weeklong experience of living in community at the Cathedral Center retreat center as they experienced the plight of the poor, homeless and hungry in Los Angeles and surrounding communities. The group spent several mornings providing crafts and games for children at Las Familias del Pueblo on Skid Row. Another morning was spent observing and participating in healthy food classes at Immanuel Church, El Monte, held by Seeds of Hope staff. The pilgrims visited MacArthur Park and shared their lunches with homeless people there, then spent an hour debriefing with Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool. The group also paid a visit to the Episcopal Urban Intern Program and met with Bishop J. Jon Bruno and the Cathedral Center staff. The pilgrimage, now in its third year, is a project of the Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries, and was led by Jana Milhon-Martin of St. John's Church, La Verne, the Rev. Todd Blackham of St. James' Church, South Pasadena, and Chris Tumilty, diocesan youth officer. See below for a Just Action video about the pilgrimage.

Tickets are $21 each, and are available from the Dodger coordinator at each congregation. A fireworks display will follow the game.

Students attend lectures on anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, nutrition and healthy eating, community organizing, leadership and advocacy, as well as dance and exercise moves. Many of them will go on to teach classes in their own communities. Jubilee Ministries Consortium film gets festival award
This month, Jubilee Consortium was chosen to be a part of the 2014 SparkChange Festival from Public Interest Pictures.  The festival pairs Los Angeles non-profits with professional filmmakers to collaborate to create, in just 48 hours, a short film that shares a powerful story. Jubilee Consortium was paired with Nicky Keros, a Southern California native who is studying film at the Pratt Institute in New York. Keros worked with the Jubilee staff to craft  a video that reflects the vision and mission of Jubilee Consortium's Episcopal Urban Intern Program. The short film, which may be viewed here, was selected for honorable mention on the night of the festival.

A letter that shook me
and changed my life

by Malcolm Boyd

I got involved in civil rights gradually. At the outset I simply cared deeply but didn't know very much about it. It became clear that it was one thing to be legitimately in favor of racial justice, yet quite another to take a controversial public stand on the issue. Race was dynamite as a major issue in America. In 1961 it was sharply dividing U.S. families, places of worship, universities, you name it. Virtually everybody had an opinion. I realized that I was acutely interested. I was touched by influential writings of the time, voices speaking from books and the theater and in film. But I kept my distance intellectually and emotionally.
