'Love is our family value' is theme of Episcopal presence at L.A. Pride Eucharist, parade "Love is our family value" was the theme as Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce presided during the June 8 Los Angeles LGBT Pride celebration Eucharist, for which a band from Holy Faith Church in Inglewood provided music, and Dr. H. Adam Ackley (pictured top left with Bruce at the Eucharist) preached the homily. Parade participants included representatives of various diocesan congregations marching with the Pasadena Scottish Pipes & Drums (center left). The music and marchers drew sustained applause throughout the route, along which Bishop Bruce and her husband, Steve, were driven in a vintage yellow convertible (bottom left). The Rev. Canon Malcolm Boyd, celebrating his 91st birthday that day, and his husband Mark Thompson rode among the LGBT "pioneers" in the parade. The diocesan presence was well received throughout the day, said the Rev. Canon Susan Russell, chair of the Bishop's Commission on LGBT Ministry. Russell is also quoted in a Los Angeles Times story featured here. The street Eucharist continues an annual tradition begun in 1986 under the leadership of Canon Randy Kimmler; parade participation dates back to the 1970s with members of the Los Angeles chapter of Integrity, whose ministry preceded formation of the Commission in the early 1990s by Bishop Frederick Borsch. St. John's, Corona, dedicates new building St. John's Church, Corona, celebrated the opening of its new church building on June 8, the Day of Pentecost, amid a sea of red shirts, accompanied by a flag posting from the resident Boy Scout troop, music from the Circle City Chorale and remarks from Corona Mayor Karen Spiegel. Bishop Cathy Roskam led the dedication service and preached the sermon -- an inspiring spiritual pep talk, according to the Rev. Canon John Saville, rector (pictured above with Roskam). He said the congregation looks forward to new ministry on their renovated campus.
