Korean convocation - and an ordination - at the Cathedral Center, Los AngelesMembers of the Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries' Korean Convocation paused on June 4 during their four-day meeting in Los Angeles to attend the ordination of Yein Esther Kim, daughter of Archbishop Paul Keun San Kim, primate of Korea. Bishop Bruno ordained Esther Kim a deacon as her father participated in the service, also attended by Bishops Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce and Mary D. Glasspool and a number of clergy of the Diocese of Los Angeles. Hosted by Bishop Bruce, the Korean ministry representatives came from as far away as Virginia, Vancouver and Korea. In addition to meetings and discussion, they took several field trips to view ministry in action, notably to Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles to witness Korean chaplain interns at work there in a program started in 2012 as the result of a conversation between Archbishop Kim and Bishop Bruce. Below: Esther Kim poses with Bishops Bruce, Glasspool, Kim and Bruno just before her ordination. At bottom: the Korean Convocation members gather with Bishop Bruce and Archbishop Kim for a group photo in the Cathedral Center patio at the end of a busy day of meetings. ________________________________________________________ Hall of Fame at Garfield High
Bishop Jon Bruno and the Grammy-winning band Los Lobos were inducted June 1 into the Hall of Fame of the Garfield High School Alumni Foundation of Los Angeles. The foundation, which recognizes the accomplishments of Garfield High School, raises funds to support school athletics and other programs. Bruno, a 1964 graduate of Garfield High School, was recognized by his mentor and friend, Coach Al Padilla, who paid tribute to the bishop's accomplishments as part of the football team and throughout his professional career. To great applause, Los Lobos played a short set of trademark tracks, and the bishop received a standing ovation when he stood to thank Coach Padilla and the foundation. The event was held at Stevens Steak House in the City of Commerce. Native American women who meet regularly in "talking circles" at Episcopal churches in Los Angeles and Riverside gathered in retreat at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in Echo Park (Los Angeles) May 31 to learn about Asset Based Community Development, a system for using existing resources to build up a community. "They spoke of healing, practicing their traditional spirituality, and reconciliation within communities to build a better world now for the youth," said Sarah Eagle Heart (Lakota), indigenous ministries officer for The Episcopal Church, who attended the meeting. "Their reconciling wisdom give me hope." The Rev. Mary Crist (Blackfeet Nation), Native American ministries coordinator for the Diocese of Los Angeles (at right in photo), wrote on her Facebook page, "We shared stories of joy and pain, tears and laughter, hopes and dreams. God was present. Of that, I have no doubt." Crist is also priest-in-charge of St. Michael's Ministry Center in Riverside. ________________________________________________________
