J. Jon Bruno Bishop Bruno calls diocese to move forward in ministry as property cases are resolved

Citing the end of litigation involving several church properties that have been in dispute since 2004, Bishop J. Jon Bruno has issued a pastoral letter to the people and congregations of the Diocese of Los Angeles announcing resolution of those issues and calling on Episcopalians to concentrate their energies on ministry and unity.

Bruno explains in the letter that all four disputed churches have been returned to the diocese by court action after dissident congregations attempted to claim the properties as their own. St. James the Great Church, Newport Beach, and St. Luke's of the Mountains, La Crescenta, will continue as Episcopal congregations. He wrote that "congregations will not be restarted as All Saints, Long Beach, or St. David's, North Hollywood. The Corporation Sole currently holds title to the church property in Long Beach - a city where there are three neighboring Episcopal Church congregations - and a negotiated settlement allows the present congregation to worship on site while remunerating the Diocese for use of those facilities. Meanwhile, the Oakwood School has purchased the North Hollywood property, a fitting use in the mission of local secondary education."

Bruno continues, "It is important that we remain in community, not in isolation, and that in charity we create space for people whose views may differ from our own. We are not here to judge one another but rather to be in joy with each other in the name of Jesus." He encourages parishioners to engage wholeheartedly in local and diocesan ministries, especially environmental and food security programs under Seeds of Hope and reconciliation programs under Hands in Healing.

Full text of the letter, which is to be read in all congregations of the Diocese of Los Angeles on Sunday, May 11, is here.

Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in Los Angeles
Mayor's Prayer Breakfast
J. Jon Bruno At the invitation of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Bishop Jon Bruno provided the invocation and opening remarks for the Mayor's Interfaith Observance of the National Day of Prayer, a "celebration of the wide diversity of faith traditions in Los Angeles," held on May 1 at Getty House, the mayor's official residence. Episcopal clergy and lay leaders of Los Angeles city congregations were well represented among invited guests, whom Garcetti encouraged to continue working together, especially for comprehensive immigration reform. Music from the Sikh tradition and Abrahamic selections by the Yuval Ron Ensemble enhanced the gathering, held in a large tent on the garden lawn of the Hancock Park residence. Above: Seated at the mayor's table are (from left) Bishop Guy Erwin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Southwest California Synod, Garcetti, Jihad Turk of the Claremont Theological School, Rabbi Mark Diamond of AJC Los Angeles, Dean John Bakas of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Bruno, and Rabbi Laura Brous of the IKAR (Hebrew for "essence") community. Bruno also addressed the gathering in his capacity as current president of the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders.

Seminary's chair of Anglican Studies
named for Bishop Frederick H. Borsch

The Frederick Houk Borsch Chair of Anglican Studies was inaugurated at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) in a brief ceremony in the seminary's Schaeffer Ashmead Chapel during Eucharist on April 9.

Borsch was the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, serving from June 1989 to the end of January 2002, when he was succeeded by Bishop J. Jon Bruno. He has been teaching Anglican Studies at LTSP since the fall of 2003; for much of that time he also has been a professor of New Testament.

The Anglican Studies chair at LTSP was established as the result of a generous gift from the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. Colleagues and graduates of LTSP serving in that diocese joined the seminary community and members of the LTSP board of trustees for the worship service, at which Borsch presided.

Before becoming bishop of Los Angeles, Borsch had been on the faculty of several seminaries in the United States and England, and served as dean and president of Church Divinity School of the Pacific and interim dean of the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. Author or editor of more than 20 books, he was for some years dean of the chapel at Princeton University, where he taught in the department of religion and the program on the history, archaeology and religion of the ancient world.

What happened when
I wrote a best-seller

by Malcolm Boyd

The year was 1965. The book was Are You Running With Me, Jesus? It was a collection of contemporary prayers that wasn't supposed to be a best seller at all. There was little or no advance publicity.  Also it became apparent reviews would be scarce. There didn't appear to be another book quite like it. So I was unprepared to open the New York Times one morning and find an enthusiastic lead review of my unheralded tome. Clearly my life was changing, and abruptly.
