Ordination in a Venice laundry
Most ordinations take place in a church, but on April 28 Bishop J. Jon Bruno presided at an ordination in a different center of ministry; a Venice Beach laundromat used by the community of Thad's for its Laundry Love program. Scott Claassen of Thad's became a deacon surrounded by the slosh of washers and the hum of dryers as friends, volunteers, and poor and homeless clients gathered around to take part in the rite and to raise their hands in blessing as the bishop spoke the words of ordination; "Father, through Jesus Christ your Son, give your Holy Spirit to Scott; fill him with grace and power and make him a deacon in your church." Above right: the new deacon distributes communion bread to those in attendance. Thad's is a mission station congregation that describes itself as "a movement of missionary people who've made a choice to leave the relative safety of the established church and take the love of Jesus 'to the streets.'" Take a trip to the Fabulous 50s this Saturday with Holy Family Services Join Holy Family Services on Saturday, May 3, for a 1950s-themed garden party to honor its volunteers and celebrate adoptive families on the occasion of its 65th anniversary. The event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of Bishop Jon and Mary Bruno at 3435 E. California Blvd., Pasadena. Live and silent auctions will be part of the festivities. Tickets are $65 for adults, $20 for children ages 4 to 12; sponsorships are also available. Attendees can buy $5 opportunity tickets to win an iPad Air. Proceeds will benefit Holy Family Services, an institution of the Diocese of Los Angeles that works with birth, foster and adoptive families to place children in loving permanent homes. The survey underscores that older people are quietly moving in with their parents at twice the rate of their younger counterparts. So let's face it: life for average people isn't getting easier. As a matter of fact, it's enormously complicated. Aging itself requires far more skill than it did. It's not an easy process at all.
