Camp Stevens well site blessing
Camp Stevens well site blessing Blessing of the well site
Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce, above and at right, blesses the site of Camp Stevens' new well, which will replace two older wells that have run dry. The bishop visited the camp on April 19, Holy Saturday, to perform the rite, which was attended by most of the camp staff. The new well site is at the easternmost end of the property, on "Pump Road," which runs parallel to the streambed and Highway 78. Beth Bojarski, Camp Stevens executive director, told the Episcopal News recently that there is no immediate danger of running out of water, but signs are up around the campus, asking guests to take shorter showers and use water even more wisely than they already do. It does mean even wiser water conservation during summer camp but Bojarski predicts no change in attendance levels as a result. "We aren't turning groups away," she said.

Youth pilgrims at Las Familias de Pueblo in 2013 LA Pilgrimage will take youth to
the city to serve and learn

Youth of the diocese, from rising eighth graders to high school and college age, are invited to join the annual L.A. City Pilgrimage, a week of service and unique experience June 15 - 20 sponsored by the diocese's Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries. Pilgrims will stay at the Cathedral Center retreat center in the Echo Park neighborhood and will work with men, women and children at Skid Row ministries, including Los Familias del Pueblo, a 25-year-old ministry for families on Skid Row led by Episcopal priest Alice Callaghan, as well as the Midnight Mission, the Episcopal Urban Intern Program and the food bank at the Cathedral Center. Jana Milhon-Martin, youth leader at St. John's Church, La Verne, and chaplain Todd Blackham will lead the group. "Pilgrimage is a time to look for God in one of the largest urban centers on the planet," says Milhon-Martin. "Through service and experiences which require students to come into direct contact with the realities of urban life, we endeavor to collapse the differences between 'us' and 'them.' It is a rich and rewarding week of service-learning." Cost per person is $350; scholarships are available. The first information meeting is at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 4 at St. John's Church, 4745 Wheeler Avenue, La Verne 91750 (909.596.1321). The leaders also are seeking a college student to assist with the pilgrimage. For more information, contact Milhon-Martin at jana_mimartin@hotmail.com. A Just Action video about last year's pilgrimage is here.

How can we adjust
to new hard times?

by Malcolm Boyd

The surge in middle-aged people moving in with their parents reflects the grim reality that has taken hold in the aftermath of the Great Recession, according to an April 21 report in the Los Angeles Times. The survey underscores that older people are quietly moving in with their parents at twice the rate of their younger counterparts. So let's face it: life for average people isn't getting easier. As a matter of fact, it's enormously complicated. Aging itself requires far more skill than it did. It's not an easy process at all.

'Historical Jesus' series brings together two faiths
Rabbi Judith HaLevy and Rev. Joyce Stickney choose to highlight the shared ideals that bond their respective faiths, not the differences. In keeping with the spirit of similarities versus differences, the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue, led by HaLevy, and St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, led by Stickney, created a four-part series titled "Historical Jesus" in which members of both the church and the synagogue, as well as any other interested residents, met once a week to discuss pre-modern Jerusalem and the early life of Jesus.
