Renewal of Vows

Clergy gather at Cathedral Center
for annual renewal of vows

Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce was the celebrant and Bishop Mary Glasspool the preacher when some 250 clergy of the diocese gathered on Tuesday of Holy Week at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul for the annual renewal of ordination vows. Bishop Jon Bruno blessed oils from the Holy Land that were distributed among the clergy for anointing and healing. Glasspool's sermon, "Singing the Lord's song in a strange land," may be read in text form here: see Just Action below for video. Below left: Bishop Bruce prepares to enter the Cathedral Center church for the service; at center, Bishop Bruno listens as a litanist chants prayers; at right, Bishop Glasspool delivers the sermon, which clergy received with an enthusiastic -- and unusual -- standing ovation.

Participants depart determined to make a difference after 'Reclaiming the Gospel of Peace' conference
After nearly three days of learning and praying about how to turn the epidemic tide of violence in the world, participants in the Episcopal Church's "Reclaiming the Gospel of Peace" gathering -- including a six-person contingent from the Diocese of Los Angeles -- left Oklahoma City April 11 to begin Holy Week as the United States witnessed yet another shooting attack in Overland Park, Kansas. A reflection on the conference from Patricia Terry of St. Cross Church, Hermosa Beach, is here. Comprehensive coverage, including video reports, from Episcopal News Service is here. Participants from the Southland, in addition to Terry, were Bishop Mary D. Glasspool; the Rev. Gary Commins, rector of St. Luke's Church, Long Beach; Andrea Briggs, member of All Saints' Church, Riverside; and the Rev. Dina Ferguson, priest-in-charge of St. Michael the Archangel Church, El Segundo, who led a workshop on Biblical stories of peace.

'Called to the Wall' pilgrimage group makes
third annual trip to
US - Mexico border

The third annual "Called to the Wall" pilgrimage in support of immigrants began in Echo Park across the street from the Cathedral Center. Led by the Rev. Frank Alton (at left in photo above), priest-in-charge of the Congregation of St. Athanasius, pilgrims prayed the first Stations of the Cross, then started the 140-mile trip by car to the U.S. - Mexico border, stopping at St. Michael's Church, Anaheim, and St. Paul's Cathedral in the Diocese of San Diego for additional Stations along the way. The life-size figure of Jesus pictured above right, which originated in El Salvador and is usually housed at Trinity Church in Los Angeles, accompanied the pilgrims, carried in a pickup truck and adorned with palms. At each stop, pilgrims continued to join the company, which had  swelled to 150 by the time it reached Friendship Park in San Diego, where the pilgrims left their cars and walked along the coast to the border wall. There Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce of Los Angeles (in vestments in photo below) and Bishop James Mathes of San Diego celebrated Eucharist as clergy from the Anglican Church of Mexico did the same on the other side of the wall.

Lent Madness 2012

As this issue of The Episcopal News Update was about to be e-mailed, Charles Wesley, Anglican priest and writer of beloved hymns, was leading Episcopal deaconess and missionary Harriet Bedell by 223 votes in the race for the Golden Halo -- and the Supreme Executive Committee of Lent Madness had had to take away voting privileges from three people who were attempting to stuff the ballot box in Bedell's favor.

The winner is to be announced at 8 a.m. EDT on Maundy Thursday, April 17.

Start feeling your age?

by Malcolm Boyd

Growing older possesses many deep, often mysterious meanings. I wonder: is there a particular moment of truth? For me, such a moment occurred when I found myself at a casual, informal party where everyone was at least 30 years younger than me. We may glimpse the emergent truth of our aging in someone else's eyes, our own candid look in a mirror, or recognition of some other change taking place within us.
