Invoking scripture, American values, religious leaders call for reform of US immigration policies
Speaking with the voices of their traditions and their scriptures, eight Los Angeles religious leaders - Roman Catholic, Armenian, Jewish, Protestant, Muslim and Episcopal - stood shoulder to shoulder on April 4 and called on President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno and Bishop Suffragan Mary D. Glasspool represented the Diocese of Los Angeles at the vigil of prayer and solidarity, which was held at Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles and sponsored by the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders. NYA sponsors 'Secretos' staged reading May 17 in Venice "Secretos: Stories We Shouldn't Tell," a staged reading of works written by seven high school students from Neighborhood Youth Association, will be performed on Saturday, May 17 at Electric Lodge, 1416 Electric Avenue, Venice, in two performances; at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. A professional cast with a visionary director and producer team will bring to life "seven extremely personal, bold and graphic short screenplays on subject matter many believe is too taboo to be talked about, let alone publicly displayed," according to Viva Krasinski, NYA executive director. Spring means time to register for summer camp Springtime is here, and that means it's time to register for summer sessions for children, teens, adults and families at Camp Stevens, located near Julian, in the mountains east of San Diego. Camp Stevens offers four Adventure Sessions this summer for campers age 8 to 15: July 6 - 12, July 13 - 19, July 20 - 26 and July 27 - Aug. 2. These sessions feature feeding chickens, face painting, hiking, team-building games, baking cookies, swimming, pond exploration, archery, lawn games and countless other activities focused on entertaining, educating and empowering kids. The camp also has on- and off-site specialty sessions geared to teens, including the International Odyssey camp with students from Japan for campers age 11 - 16 (Aug. 3 - 9); Rock Climbing Camp (July 6 - 11); Backpacking Basics for ages 12 - 17 (July 20 - 25); and 10-Day Backpacking Trek for ages 13-18 (July 27 - August 5). Counselor Training, for ages 16 and up, is June 22 - July 1. St. Luke's, Long Beach, plans Pride Month events For the 24rd year, St. Luke's Episcopal Church will take part in the Long Beach Pride Festival, beginning with "Rainbow Reflections of Pride," a concert of choral and spoken works by LGBTQ and LGBTQ-friendly composers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday May 16, the night before the festival opens, in its historic church at 7th Street and Atlantic Avenue. A $10 in-advance donation is requested ($15 at the door). A reception hosted by the St. Luke's LGBTQ & Friends Ministry will follow the performance.  Workshop will teach how to grow 'Food from a Flowerpot'
Environmental Change-Makers at Holy Nativity Church, Westchester, will offer a hands-on workshop on "Food from a Flowerpot" on Saturday, April 12, 9 - 11 a.m. in its community garden. If you have a flowerpot -- or any sort of container you can have an edible garden on your apartment balcony or across a patio or driveway. In this class, Joanne Poyourow will talk about small varieties of common food plants which work great in containers. She will cover tips for watering, sun versus shade, summer heat, compost/worm bins, and more. Bring a flowerpot (24 inch or 5 gallon), and you can take home a garden. Potting soil and seeds will be provided: seedlings may be available for purchase. High school seniors, college students invited to join 'Beach Progressives' Beach Progressives, a developing Episcopal-Lutheran young adult ministry in Long Beach, invites rising high school seniors and college-age students from anywhere in the diocese to come together to explore the eternal question: "What do I want to be when I grow up?" We'll share stories, ask questions, reflect creatively, invite God into the conversation, and have good fun with new friends. Dinner will be served.
