One Voice for Immigration Reform Interfaith service set to open Immigration Awareness Month
L.A. Council of Religious Leaders invites all to attend
Commemorating the start of Immigration Awareness Month, the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders invites the public to gather as "One Voice for Immigration Reform" during an interfaith prayer service at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 4 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 555 W. Temple St., Los Angeles.

Calling for comprehensive and bipartisan reform of federal immigration policy, the service will include testimonials from immigrant families, prayers led by Council members, and music provided for the occasion as part of a wider nationwide vigil planned for the first weekend of April, Immigration Awareness Month.

Archbishop José H. Gomez will preside and welcome Council members, who include:
  • Bishop J. Jon Bruno, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, council president, who will outline reform priorities;
  • Bishop Minerva G. Carcańo, Los Angeles area resident bishop of the United Methodist Church, who will deliver a call to action;
  • Brother Shakeel Syed, executive director of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, who will join in leading prayers for transformation.
  • Rabbi Mark Diamond, regional director of AJC Los Angeles, who as the Council's immediate past president has led its most recent two years of advocacy for comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform.
Representing faiths in the Abrahamic tradition for more than three decades, the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders is an informal alliance of heads of major religious bodies in the Greater Los Angeles area consulting and collaborating in common cause.

Requiem or Renaissance?
Diane Jardine Bruce Requiem or Renaissance?
Is the Episcopal Church headed for a bright future or irrelevance? That was the overall question considered by a capacity crowd of some 65 people at Holy Spirit Fellowship in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles on March 29. Sponsored by the Creative  Ministries group of the diocese, the conversation Jimmy Bartz was led by Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce (top right); the Rev. Jimmy Bartz  (center right) of Thad's, an emergent congregation in Santa Monica; and the Rev. Barry Taylor (bottom right) of All Saints' Church, Beverly Hills; and facilitated by Christian Kassoff of St. Wilfrid's, Huntington Beach, and Steve Barry Taylor Bruce. The group discussed how the church might transform itself in order to take the Gospel into the 21st century. Conversation ranged from changes in liturgy to re-formation of church structures and institutions. Participants represented some 20 different congregations of the diocese. The group agreed to meet again in the future; those interested in taking part may contact Bishop Bruce at 213.482.2040 or djbsuffragan@ladiocese.org.

Important information about group life insurance and AD&D coverage for church employees
Church Life is offering a group life insurance open enrollment for all eligible employees that have not been previously enrolled as part of the diocesan benefits program offered by the Episcopal Church Medical Trust. Now is the time to get all eligible employees enrolled in the plan.

By Friday, April 4, employers should receive a letter from Church Life with the information needed to get eligible employees enrolled. Since this is the life insurance/AD&D coverage that is part of the diocesan benefits program offered by Episcopal Medical Trust, it is not related to the life insurance that would be part of the pension program's defined benefit plan.

Don't delay! The open enrollment period ends April 30.

Aging is the biggest story of all

by Malcolm Boyd

It seemed quite natural the other day when sports superstar Kobe Bryant, 35, ruminated about growing older in the context of referring to a fashion legend. Bryant's remark is in a New Yorker interview with Ben McGrath. He said: "Giorgio Armani didn't start Armani until he was 40. Forty! There's such a life ahead."
