NYA scholarship winners

NYA Scholars
Some 30 young people from the Venice - Mar Vista area of Los Angeles celebrated winning scholarships at Neighborhood Youth Association's annual scholarship and community service awards dinner on March 7. Each of the award recipients has achieved an outstanding record in high school and college with the help of NYA's "Personal Best" program. NYA, founded as an Episcopal mission in 1899, remains an institution of the Diocese of Los Angeles. Through rigorous after-school academic tutoring and enrichment programs, it serves at-risk youth from young childhood through high school. Almost without exception its graduates go on to college and professional careers. This year, NYA also honored its robotics volunteers for their service to the agency and Google, the online information and service company, as an outstanding community partner.

Requiem or Renaissance? 'Requiem or Renaissance?' Join a discussion on the future of the Episcopal Church
Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce, the Rev. Barry Taylor, the Rev. Jimmy Bartz  and the Creative Ministries group of the Diocese of Los Angeles invites members of the diocesan community to "Requiem or Renaissance? Conversations on the Future of the Episcopal Church" on Saturday, March 29, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Holy Spirit Fellowship in Silver Lake (Los Angeles). The questions to be addressed include: Are we at the end of a golden era in terms of both church and culture and all we are essentially doing is holding a requiem for a time gone by? Or are we in the midst of a renaissance? Bishop Bruce writes: "With amazing things happening that are going to change the way we see and live in the world, a time of incredible opportunity as well as challenge, a time in which how we think about church, how we do church and what church even means can be called into question and re-framed for a new era that is emerging all around us." Light snacks will be provided. Because of space restrictions, the conversation is limited to 50 participants, and reservations must be made in advance here. Holy Spirit is located at 3711 Evans Street, Los Angeles 90027.

U.S. flag IRIS offers free citizenship
legal services

Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Service (IRIS), a program of the Diocese of Los Angeles, is a member of the National New Americans Campaign, a groundbreaking national network of legal-service providers, faith-based organizations, businesses, foundations and community leaders that is paving a better road to citizenship. As part of this network, IRIS for a limited time is waiving its normal fee and offering citizenship services for free. According to IRIS director Meghan Tumilty, this is also a good time to apply because U.S. Citizenship and Immigration service recently released a new N400 Application for Naturalization form that is twice and long as the old version -- and time is running out to apply for citizenship using the older, simpler version N400. In addion, she notes, new Americans generally see a boost in earnings of 8 to 11 percent. In addition, those who achieve citizenship in the next month will be able to register to vote in the Fall of 2014 for governor and congress members. To get started, call IRIS for an appointment at 323.667.0489, ext. 112 or 213.819.1890 (Spanish), or stop by the IRIS office, located at 3621 Brunswick Avenue Los Angeles 90039, during office hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.).  IRIS can also send agents to those who are unable to reach the office: call Tumilty at 323.661.8588 for more information. Fee waivers for USCIS filing fee are available for low-income applicants.

Hank Rieger
Henry "Hank" Rieger
September 20, 1918 - March 5, 2014

Henry "Hank" Rieger, a journalist, television pioneer, public relations executive, editor of Emmy magazine, former president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Episcopal lay leader, died at his home in Oceanside on March 5. He was 95. In addition to his lifetime of hard work in the news and entertainment industry -- he once said he would want to be remembered as a workaholic -- he was a member of St. Michael & All Angels Church, Studio City, and later All Saints Church, Pasadena, and a longtime member of the diocese's Program Group on Communication, serving for many years as its chair. He led the publicity team for the service of "enthronement" when Robert C. Rusack became the fourth bishop of Los Angeles, and frequently (though quietly) used his industry connections to promote the interests of the church and the diocese. He also was a generous mentor to students during his 20 years as an adjunct faculty member at USC. He retired to the San Diego area in the late 1990s with his wife Deborah A. Hays Rieger, who died in 2013 after 65 years of marriage. Survivors include a sister, a niece and several cousins. A full obituary from the Los Angeles Times is here: an appreciation published by the Hollywood website GoldDerby is here. Plans for memorial services will be announced when they are available.

Works of Palestrina and others will be performed by the LASchola.  Lent is the penitential period of forty days that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at Easter. Our need to humbly take stock of ourselves and become closer to our neighbors and to God is the expectation here. All are welcome and a reception will follow the service.
