'Ashes to Go' for Ash Wednesday

  Ashes to Go
The Rev. Frank Alton places ashes on the foreheads of people in Echo Park, across the street from the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, where Alton is priest-in-charge of the congregation of St. Athanasius, which beginning in December will celebrate its 150th year of ministry in the Echo Park neighborhood. Ashes to Go is a national trend in which clergy of Episcopal churches venture out into streets, parks, bus and subway stations and other unconventional locations to remind passers-by that "dust they are, and to dust they will return." One young woman in Echo Park, asked if she would like ashes imposed, said, in surprise, "I would, actually. That's crazy!" She stepped forward and, closing her eyes, waited for the ashes and the words that reminded her of her mortality. Then, the rite completed, she thanked Alton and continued on her way. Below: A member of St. Athanasius' congregation holds a sign inviting park-goers to take part in the imposition of ashes.                                              Photos/Janet Kawamoto
