Seeds of Hope Starting a garden? Seeds of Hope/Camp Stevens workshops
can help make it a success

Is your church, school or organization planning to start a garden? Join Camp Stevens staff members for two workshops at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church and School, San Juan Capistrano, on building a foundation for a successful organic garden. Participants are welcome to attend one or both workshops.

The first is "Building a Foundation: Community" on Saturday, March 15 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., which will focus on building your garden's foundation within the community. Topics will include strategies for planning and working in small groups that encourage participation and consensus building.

The second workshop topic is "Building a Foundation: Soil" on Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. It's time to start your garden: the first thing to think about is dirt. Learn how to build and maintain healthy soil and what soil can teach about the value of diversity. Topics will include soil management, composting, and an introduction to theological and ecological lessons to be learned from healthy soil.

Cost is $10 per participant for each workshop, including lunch. Both workshops will include a tour of St. Margaret's thriving school garden, which was started with guidance and training from Camp Stevens.
Workshops are sponsored by Seeds of Hope, whose aim is "creating and sustaining gardens throughout the Diocese of Los Angeles to promote physical and spiritual wellness for individuals and communities." For more information, or to register for workshops, contact Coreen@campstevens.org.

St. Margaret's School is located at 31641 La Novia Avenue, San Juan Capistrano 92675.

Black Christ icon
Black History Month:
Congregations mirror
changing times

As part of its Black History month coverage, the Episcopal News offers a snapshot of six congregations in the diocese that for at least some portion of their lives have been regarded as predominantly African American.

In many ways, their histories mirror shifting demographics and changing times and reflect a strong legacy of commitment to community involvement, social action and care for others.

Part 1: St. John's ProCathedral, Los Angeles, and Church of the Holy Faith, Inglewood

Part 2: The Church of Christ the Good Shepherd and the Church of the Advent, Los Angeles

Part 3: St. Timothy's Church, Compton, and Church of the Holy Communion, Gardena, will be published on Feb. 26.

The "Black Christ" icon (above) was created by the Rev. Canon Warner Traynham, former rector of St. John's, Los Angeles. For more about the icon and Traynham's thoughts on the importance of black depictions of Jesus, as well as an article about historically African-American congregations in the Diocese of Los Angeles, see the Late Winter 2014 issue of The Episcopal News here.

Peace & Justice Film Series: Nostalgia for the Light
Church of the Messiah
614 N. Bush Street, Santa Ana 92701
Information: 714.543.9389
This poetic and moving documentary by Patricio Guzmán takes us to the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, the only place on earth with no moisture whatsoever. Here, scientists peer into powerful telescopes through the thin atmosphere, attempting to understand the history and destiny of the universe. They are alone with their thoughts and with the cosmos. At the same time, Chileans seek to understand their own national history of revolution, dictatorship, and unthinkable crimes against the people. Many of Chile's "disappeared" were disposed of in the trackless wastes of the Atacama, and their mothers come here to search through the sands in hopeless quest to recover the remains of their sons and daughters. Human history and cosmic history come together in an unforgettable visual meditation. Awards: Best Documentary, European Film Awards, 2010; Jury Award for Best Documentary, Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, 2011; Best Documentary, Abu Dhabi Film Festival, 2010; Best Documentary, Prix ARTE, 2010

These are heady days for gay rights in many quarters. Headlines have been dominated by Michael Sam's introduction to the world as a National Football League prospect who is gay. There is widespread support for gays and lesbians in key areas of the United States and Europe. Yet this is not true worldwide. According to Amnesty International, homosexuality is illegal in 38 of 54 countries. Where Islamic law is practiced, the penalty can be death by stoning.
