Celebrating Dr. King's legacy
Bishop Michael Curry
Bishop Michael Curry of the Diocese of North Carolina preached on Jesus' command to "love your enemy" at the Diocese of Los Angeles' Jan. 18 celebration in honor of the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. In a stirring sermon, Curry told the congregation that being in the human family may be a matter of "just showing up," but that the reign of God on earth would "catch fire" if all Christians followed the command to love their enemies - even the ones in their own families, he added. Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce, below, celebrated the Eucharist, assisted by Deacons Margaret McCauley, pictured, and Jamesetta Hammons. A video of Curry's sermon is posted on the diocese's Just Action YouTube channel here. More photos are posted on the Episcopal News Facebook page here.

Winter Retreat Young adults' Winter Retreat
topic is 'Sex, Actually'

The Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministry will hold its 2014 Winter Retreat for young adults Friday - Sunday, Feb. 7 - 9 at Big Bear Lake. The topic will be "Sex, Actually." "Sex matters," says the announcement from PGYM, "especially to young adults, exploring identity and connection in the modern world. The only guidance offered by many churches in condemnation. Yet sex is more complicated than a list of dos and don'ts. What can sex say about how God relates to us? How we relate to others? And what we want to say about ourselves?" Cost for the retreat is $125 per person, including housing and food. A $25 deposit is required to register: contact Chris Tumilty at [email protected]. Space is limited to 25 participants. A jpeg flyer is here.

ACA forum
Shelley Weitzel, right, diocesan outreach and education coordinator for health care, helps a client work out her best options for health care under the Affordable Care Act at a forum held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Barstow, in January.

Health care forums, enrollment continue
Californians continue to sign up for health insurance through Covered California, the state's online health care marketplace - and the Rev. Joanne Leslie, archdeacon of the diocese, and Shelley Weitzel, diocesan outreach and education coordinator for health care, are helping them do so through a series of forums at congregations, schools and food pantries throughout the Southland. Leslie and Weitzel are working under a grant to the diocese from Community Health Councils, a nonprofit, community-based health education and policy organization. Their mission is to help people navigate new options that have been made available under the Affordable Care Act, especially for those who have had difficulty obtaining health insurance in the past. Leslie and Weitzel will continue to help people sign up for health care until open enrollment closes on March 31, and again after it re-opens in October. (An article outlining their work will appear in the next issue of The Episcopal News magazine, due out in early February.) To schedule a forum, or for information, contact Weitzel at [email protected].

malcolmboydWorld welcomes Pope Francis'
new voice and style

by Malcolm Boyd

A new voice can be exciting and challenging. A new attitude can be more significant than just new utterances. New leadership can mean fresh hope instead of old reruns. So Pope Francis is more than the leader of one billion Roman Catholics. He is a key person in a global "Interfaith Age" embracing many faiths and religious leaders. More, he's a bearer of hope for countless people who struggle with definitions of prayer, community, faith, service and sacrifice.
