IA Veterans Re-entry training for vets of Iraq, Afghanistan wars to begin next week
Soldiers in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were trained as warriors, to complete difficult tasks in frightening and dangerous circumstances. Now many of those veterans have finished their service, returned to the United States and found that re-entering civilian life is a challenge that makes them feel much of their purpose and many of their relationships have been lost. Help is available, according to Caldwell Williams, whose IA (Iraq-Afghanistan) Veteran Transition Training program will offer a three-day intensive training Jan. 14 - 16 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul for veterans returning to the civilian world. Haiti baptism mural Remembering Haiti on the fourth anniversary of 2010 quake
Sunday, Jan. 12 is the fourth anniversary of the 2010 earthquake that devastated much of  Haiti. The Episcopal Church invites its members to mark and remember this day in prayer and gratitude for the continued ministry of the Episcopal Church in Haiti, which is a significant part of the everyday lives of the island people with its 250 schools, a dozen clinics, two hospitals, and 170 congregations. Locally, several congregations and schools in the Diocese of Los Angeles have relationships with churches and schools in Haiti. To help mark this anniversary, raise awareness, and contribute to the rebuilding of Trinity Cathedral, the Episcopal Church presents two lesson plans with stories, ideas, videos, prayers, and pictures:
Lesson Plan for Haiti for children and younger youth
Lesson Plan for Haiti for adults and older youth

Brian McLaren Brian McLaren to address 'Christian Identity in a Multifaith World'

Author and speaker Brian McLaren will speak on "Christian Identity in a Multifaith World" on Saturday, Feb. 22, 3 - 5 p.m. at St. John's ProCathedral in a program presented by the Guibord Center. McClaren will address the questions of whether one can be a commited Christian without having to either condemn or convert people of other faiths, and if it's possible to affirm other religious traditions without watering down one's own faith. McLaren proposes a new faith alternative, one built on "benevolence and solidarity rather than rivalry and hostility," according to the Guibord Center. "This way of being Christian is strong but doesn't strong-arm anyone, going beyond mere tolerance to vigorous hospitality toward, interest in, and collaboration with 'the other.'" McLaren is an author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. A former college English teacher and pastor, he is an ecumenical global networker among innovative Christian leaders. His books include A New Kind of Christianity, A Generous Orthodoxy, Naked Spirituality, and Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? St. John's ProCathedral is located at 514 W. Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles 90007. For reservations and information, click here. There is no charge. A reception will follow the program. The Guibord Center, based at the procathedral, works to increase understanding among Los Angeles' diverse faith groups.

St. Andrew's, Fullerton, logo Fullerton church will offer class in 'Practicing Compassion'
Do you have a deep desire to follow Christ's invitation to love, but wonder about what this means practically? What do we do when we have been wounded by another, when there are serious injustices in the world, or when, try as we might, we just can't forgive?  How, exactly, do we become a people who love God and others as ourselves? "Practicing Compassion," a class to be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesdays, Jan. 21 to April 8, at St. Andrew's Church, Fullerton, was developed by the Triptykos School of Compassion from the  Center for Engaged Compassion and will involve both instruction and practice. Participants will gain specific tools for dealing with these important questions. The program is best experienced if participants can attend most sessions, as each class builds on the former ones. For more information contact the Rev. Karri Backer at karri.backer@gmail.com. Suggested donation: $20. St. Andrew's Church is located at 1231 E. Chapman Avenue, Fullerton 92832 (714.870.4350).
