Susanne Crummey honored
upon retirement from Hillsides
Susanne Crummey dedication
Associate Executive Director Susanne Crummey retired Nov. 30 from Hillsides after 43 years. "We will miss Susanne terribly as no one can ever take her place," said Hillsides Chief Executive Officer Joseph M. Costa.  "Her leadership abilities, her tireless energy, her empathy, and her role as a mentor helped shape Hillsides into the multi-faceted organization that we are today." Some 150 Hillsides staff members gathered for a retirement luncheon, at which Costa presented Crummey with a plaque dedicating the North Annex building on Hillsides' main campus to her. As associate executive director, a position she has held for decades, Crummey supervised Hillsides' residential treatment services and education center. She also oversaw the human resources, quality improvement, volunteer, chaplain, and nursing departments, was key in building Hillsides Family Resource Centers, and worked closely with the Hillsides board of director, among other duties. Crummey began her career at Hillsides in 1970 as a therapist. Prior to being promoted to her current position, she was the director of treatment services and assistant executive director.

Church of the Messiah Santa Ana parish seeks 'compassion coats' for local homeless

Abel Lopez, rector of Church of the Messiah in Santa Ana, has called on members of his congregation to collect unused coats in their closets as "compassion coats" to donate to the homeless and poor this week, just before Dec. 21, the winter solstice and longest night of the year. Noting an increase in families living on the street, he called especially for children's coats, and invited other Episcopalians to join the effort. "Compassion coats" may be delivered to Church of the Messiah at 614 N. Bush Street in Santa Ana (at Civic Center Drive, across from the Post Office). Parishioners will distribute them to men, women, and children during the weekend. For further information, contact the parish at 714.543.9389 or visit its website here.

Two coming events at the ProCathedral of St. John:
Ancestors of Christ windows from Canterbury Cathedral
'Art and Performance in Sacred Spaces:
Canterbury and Los Angeles
'
The role of art and music in cathedrals throughout the ages will be highlighted in "Art and Performance in Sacred Spaces: Canterbury and Los Angeles," an evening of performance and talks at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 11 at the ProCathedral of St. John in downtown Los Angeles, a Romanesque revival church built in 1925 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jeffrey Weaver, associate curator of sculpture and decorative arts at the J. Paul Getty Museum, will present an illustrated talk about how the art and architecture of Canterbury Cathedral would have influenced the experience of visitors at the beginning of the 13th century, when the shrine for Saint Thomas Becket was completed. Mark Kowalewski, dean and rector of St. John's, will discuss art, performance and faith as it is experienced at the ProCathedral. Music will be offered by the Saint John's Cathedral Choir together with Flos Campi, a USC-based early music ensemble, directed by Edward Tipton and Vicente Chavarria. The program will include anonymous medieval carols in honor of Saint Thomas Becket; Robert Fayrfax' monumental Magnificat "Regal" (from the Peterhouse Choirbooks copied for Canterbury Cathedral in 1540), and one modern work, "Ignea Vis," by Cathedral Choir member and USC student Jason Saunders on a twelfth-century text by Hildegard von Bingen. This event compliments the current exhibition "Canterbury and St. Albans: Treasures from Church and Cloister" at the Getty Center (through Feb. 2). St. John's ProCathedral is located at 514 West Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles 90007. A free-will offering will be received. Reservations are requested: please call 213.747.6285, ext. 106.

The Elephant Man poster St. John's to host production of
The Elephant Man

St. John's Episcopal ProCathedral, in association with the its Arts Guild, will host a production of the Tony Award-winning play The Elephant Man, by Bernard Pomerance Jan. 30, Feb. 1 - 2 and Feb. 6 - 8. The Elephant Man tells the real-life story of John (Joseph) Merrick, a tragically deformed young man pressed into work as a side-show attraction in late 19-century London and later rescued by Dr. Frederick Treves of Royal London Hospital. Patricia McKee, a doctoral student at the Graduate Theological Union at UC Berkeley, was inspired to produced the play at St. John's by one of the play's own recurring and potent images -- Merrick building a model of London's St. Philip's Church in his hospital apartment, a metaphor for the way artistic choices affect and create religious meaning. Tickets are $25 ($15 for students). For reservations and information, call 213.747.6285, ext. 106. St. John's ProCathedral is located at 514 West Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles 90007.
