 Memorial service honoring Nelson Mandela planned for Dec. 14 Welcoming honored guests from the South African community, the Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno invites all to the Cathedral Center of St. Paul at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 14 for a memorial service saluting South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela, who died December 5 at age 95.
The service will include a reflection offered by the Rt. Rev. Edward Mackenzie, retired bishop suffragan of Cape Town, who served in ministry with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. South Africa's current consul general in Los Angeles, the Hon. Cyril Ndaba, also has accepted Bishop Bruno's invitation to share in the service, set for the eve of Mandela's December 15 state funeral in his native village of Qunu in South Africa's Eastern Province.
Traditional South African music and dance will enliven the Los Angeles liturgy, planned at Bishop Bruno's request by the Rev. Lester Mackenzie of St. Matthew's Church, Pacific Palisades. A reception in the Cathedral Center's Great Hall will follow the service.

Save the date: Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is Jan. 18
The diocese's annual celebration commemorating the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., is planned for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, featuring the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, 11th bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, as guest preacher. Curry, who is renowned for his skills as a preacher and teacher, has been featured on The Protestant Hour radio program and North Carolina Public Radio's "The State of Things," as well as on The Huffington Post. He serves on the Task Force for Re-Imagining the Episcopal Church. His book of sermons, Crazy Christians, was released in August. Curry was elected bishop in February 2000, and consecrated in June of that year.

'Seeds of Hope' at Diocesan Convention
A stunning array of current challenges beckon the church to a pivotal moment, the Rt. Rev. Barbara Harris, retired bishop suffragan of the Diocese of Massachusetts, told Diocesan Convention on Dec. 7 in the Margaret Parker Lecture. Harris touched on and broadened many of the motifs embodied in the convention theme "Seeds of Hope," which focused largely on projects intended to alleviate local hunger. The Rev. Norman H. Boyd, most recently assistant at St. Peter's Church, San Pedro, died peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 24. He was 87. Services are set for Sunday, Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. at St. Peter's, located at 1648 W. Ninth Street, San Pedro 90732 (310.831.2361). Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce will preside; the Rev. Canon Dean Farrar will preach. Boyd had served at St. Peter's in various capacities since 1983. Previously he was a non-parochial priest for much of his ministry, but served at various times at St. Luke's, Monrovia; St. Ambrose's, Claremont; Ascension, Sierra Madre; St. Martha's, West Covina; and St. Edmund's, San Marino. He was also at congregations in northern and central California in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Norman Boyd was born in San Diego on June 29, 1926. He earned a bachelor's degree at the University of California in 1951 and a master of divinity degree at CDSP in 1956. He also attended St. Augustine College in 1956. He was ordained a deacon in December of 1955 and a priest the following June.

Are you looking for a program which encourages girls to be active in their church and teaches them about the Bible and their faith? The Girls Friendly Society, Los Angeles website is now available in Spanish at http://www.gfscalifornia.org/es/. This is an excellent website which explains how to start this program at your church. All of the teaching materials are free on the website. Girls Friendly Society is a world-wide Anglican fellowship for girls, ages 5 through 21. Currentl, there are 12 branches operating in the diocese. Girls are able to attend fun diocesan events such as Not-So-Quiet-Day, fashion show, camp and beach party. Older girls are able to attend national and world-wide assemblies.

The Cathedral Center will participate in this commemoration by ringing its carillon at the appointed time.
