Bells Bishop Bruno asks Episcopalians
to join commemoration of
Newtown tragedy on Dec. 14

Bishop J. Jon Bruno has joined the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and several other local organizations in asking churches of the diocese to toll their bells 26 times on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 9:35 a.m. in memory of the 20 children and six teachers killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, 2012. The Cathedral Center will participate in this commemoration by ringing its carillon at the appointed time. There will also be a brief gathering at 9:15 a.m. on Dec. 14 at Irvine United Congregational Church, 4915 Alton Pkwy, Irvine 92604, on the lawn at the west side of the church, to remember the victims of the Newtown tragedy. According to organizers, who include Episcopalians Canon Mary Leigh Blek and Charlie Blek of the Orange County chapter of the Brady Campaign, "there will not be overtly political messages, but rather, this will be a time to mourn and remember and let the public know that Newtown is not forgotten." Several clergy members will speak, and the event will culminate in the reading of the victims' names and the ringing of bells. Those attending will be invited to hang paper bells on living or symbolic trees in remembrance and as a sign of re-commitment to the cause of reducing gun violence. For information, or to commit a church to participate in bell-ringing, contact Becky Newman of South County Citizens Against Gun Violence, BeckyNewman2222@gmail.com or 949.786.1669.

Death at the
heart of life

by Malcolm Boyd

He had been murdered at Hayneville, Alabama, on Friday, August 20, l965.

The following Monday, people started arriving at his hometown of Keene, New Hampshire, for his funeral service that would take place the next day. We gathered at the home of his mother on Summer Street, not far from St. James' Church where his body lay in an open casket. Those of us who had seen him recently spoke to her about how much he meant to us.
