George Woodword appointed canon in El Salvador diocese
The Rev. Canon George Woodward III, rector of St. Edmund's Church, San Marino, has been appointed as canon for pastoral inclusion for the Episcopal Church of El Salvador, Bishop Martin Barahona of the Central American diocese announced in a letter on Nov. 20.
Woodward will continue as rector of St. Edmund's and a priest of the Diocese of Los Angeles, but will advise Barahona and the Diocese of El Salvador on how to foster greater inclusion for three groups: the physically handicapped, the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community and youth at risk. He will be installed as a canon on January 18, 2014 at 4 p.m. at San Juan Evangelista Anglican Church in San Salvador. Clergy and lay members of the Diocese of Los Angeles are invited to attend.
Barahona made the appointment with the consent and support of Diocese of Los Angeles Bishop J. Jon Bruno, who named Woodward an honorary canon of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in 2011.

 Training offered to help vets
of Iraq, Afghanistan wars
re-enter civilian life
Soldiers in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were trained as warriors, to complete difficult tasks in frightening and dangerous circumstances. Now many of those veterans have finished their service, returned to the United States and found that re-entering civilian life is a challenge that makes them feel much of their purpose and many of their relationships have been lost. Help is available, according to Caldwell Williams, whose IA (Iraq-Afghanistan) Veteran Transition Training program will offer a three-day intensive training Jan. 14 - 16 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul for veterans returning to the civilian world. Read more here. Volunteers needed for Thanksgiving feast at Cathedral Center The Cathedral Center Congregation of St. Athanasius will offer its annual feast for all comers on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28, co-sponsored by the bishops of the diocese. The congregation is seeking volunteers to prepare, serve and clean up after the meal. Preparation will begin at 7 a.m. Eucharist is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., and food service will begin at 12 noon and end at about 5 p.m. Food and monetary donations are welcome. To volunteer or to donate food, contact coordinator Francisco Torrero at 213.482.2040 or ftor1@sbcglobal.net. Monetary donations may be sent to the Congregation of St. Athanasius (please denote "Thanksgiving meal" in the memo line), c/o the Rev. Frank Alton, The Cathedral Center, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles 90026.

Death at the heart of life by Malcolm Boyd He had been murdered at Hayneville, Alabama, on Friday, August 20, l965. The following Monday, people started arriving at his hometown of Keene, New Hampshire, for his funeral service that would take place the next day. We gathered at the home of his mother on Summer Street, not far from St. James' Church where his body lay in an open casket. Those of us who had seen him recently spoke to her about how much he meant to us.
