Typhoon destruction in the Philippines
A family in the Philippines salvages what possessions they can from their home, which was destroyed Nov. 8 by Typhoon Haiyan.

Relief agency pairs with dioceses in the Philippines to counter typhoon devastation
Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the central Philippines on the morning of Nov. 8, causing widespread damage, killing and displacing thousands of people and knocking out power and communications lines. Episcopal Relief & Development, an agency of the Episcopal Church, is working with its local partner, the Episcopal Church in the Philippines, to assess needs and determine how best to respond to this disaster. They also are working with the National Council of Churches so that aid efforts will be coordinated as efficiently and effectively as possible. Read more here.

Youth participants' training meeting is Nov. 16 at the Cathedral Center   

Diocesan Convention will be held on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 - 7 at the Ontario Convention Center. The convention will continue the theme "Seeds of Hope: Serving Together in Abundant Vineyards," introduced at last year's meeting.

Deanery Assemblies 
Pre-convention deanery assemblies will wrap up on Saturday, Nov. 16 for Deanery 7 (in Redlands) and Sunday, Nov. 17 for Deaneries 5 and 6 (in La Verne). Schedule details are below. A bishop and/or a member of the diocesan staff will attend each gathering to present information about the 2014 proposed budget. Attendees will also have opportunities to discuss three resolutions, several proposed changes to the constitution and canons of the diocese, and other matters to come before convention. Parochial clergy and delegates should attend one of the meetings, and all other interested church members are invited to attend.

The Deanery 8 meeting was held on Oct. 26; the meeting for Deaneries 9 and 10 was on Nov. 2. The meetings for Deaneries 1, 2, 3 and 4 were held on November 9.

Convention youth volunteer training set for Nov. 16 
Generations of young people of the diocese have discovered the workings of the church by participating in the official youth presence at the annual meeting of Diocesan Convention. A mandatory training meeting for young people who have registered to volunteer is Nov. 16 at the Cathedral Center in Echo Park (Los Angeles). Convention dinner 
This year's convention will again include a Friday night dinner, featuring elegant entrees: choose from Santa Maria BBQ tri-tip, grilled salmon filet, Greek cheese potato cake (vegetarian) or lobster macaroni & cheese. Dinner will also include a house salad and cappuccino cake. (Diabetic-friendly, gluten-free and other special-needs dinners are available upon request; see the reservation form.) Tickets are now available, and should be ordered as soon as possible. An order form with complete menu choices and all other information is here.

Mark Samartha Mark Sanjay Samartha
May 6, 1981 - October 27, 2013

Mark Sanjay Samartha, 32, son of the late Rev. Michael P. Samartha and Evelyn Samartha Thompson, died on Oct. 27 in Highland. He was born in Canoga Park and lived in San Bernardino and Colton for 30 years. Over the years he was an acolyte, vestry member and bookkeeper for St. John's Episcopal Church in San Bernardino. He attended Holy Rosary Academy and graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1999. He graduated from UC Riverside and taught chess to young children. According to his family, "He was a natural at anything he attempted: sports, academics, video games, and keeping friendships." In addition to his mother, he is survived by his twin sister Rebekah of Massachusetts and younger sisters Ruth of Oregon and Anne of Rancho Cucamonga. A memorial service was held on Nov. 8 at St. John's.

Art Saves Lives Art show to honor
Pasadena physician,
support clinic in Malawi

Don Thomas, a physician and member of All Saints Church, Pasadena, will be  honored at "Art Saves Lives" fundraiser at Noor Event Space in Pasadena on Sunday, Nov. 24, 3 - 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by GAIA, an affiliated ministry of All Saints that was founded in response to the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. It will raise money for a new mobile health clinic, to be dedicated in Thomas' name, that will deliver more than 40,000 patient visits annually in remote impoverished areas of Malawi. The program will feature live jazz music by Yellowjackets founding member Russ Ferrante. Other guests include Dr. Drew Pinsky (TV host), Dr. Michael Gottlieb (medical advisor to GAIA), the Rev. Zelda Kennedy (senior associate, All Saints Church), and Todd Schafer (GAIA president and CEO). There will a live Fund-A-Need auction and a silent auction of artworks by acclaimed artists including Pam Keeley, Joyce Kohl, Karen Nagamoto, Kenton Nelson, Richard Parker, Mary Regas, James Richardson, Jean Richardson, Stanley Wilson, and fine craft pieces by Malawian artisans. E-waste Roundup in La Verne will take all electrics, electronics
St. John's Church, La Verne, will hold an E-waste Roundup on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23 - 24, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. both days. St. John's will collect computers, monitors, printers, cables, copiers, mice, modems, calculators, typewriters, shredders, gaming systems, DVD and VCR players, radios, speakers, laptops, power supplies, iPods, speakers, computer parts, telephones,scanners, vacuums, irons -- anything that plugs in -- for recycling. (Light bulbs, batteries and hazardous waste will not be accepted.) Local pickup can be arranged for large items. Santa Ana rummage sale supports ministry in Nicaragua
Church of the Messiah, Santa Ana, will host a rummage sale, with many treasures at great prices, to raise funds for Health Ministries to support rural communities in Nicaragua, on Saturday, Nov. 16, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. (The sale will also continue until 1 p.m. on Sunday).      Facsimile grave markers of bygone nobles and royals await visitors, who may create unusual artworks by laying paper over the brass plates and rubbing metallic-color wax sticks over them to capture the embossed images on more than 100 plates representing not only English nobility, but also Mayan, Celtic, Chinese and Indonesian symbols, as well as Hispanic Day of the Dead traditions. Docents will be on hand to bring old tales to life. Cost for materials is $5 and up. During its run, the center will offer traditional English teas, complete with sweets and savories, for groups, at $24 per adult and $14 per child/student.  (Advance reservations are required.) Public hours are Thursday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Groups may schedule sessions Wednesday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Groups of eight or more can be accommodated on Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

     Trees may be pre-purchased online or in person at St. Mark's Church Nov. 1 - 17; pickup or delivery (local, with a small additional donation) will be December 7, 8 - 11 a.m. Available trees include Douglas firs (5 to 9 foot), Noble Firs (4 to 10 foot) and Grand Firs (5 to 10 foot). They are cut fresh and delivered to St. Mark's two days later. "They are fragrant, fresh and full," according to a release from the congregation. "We always delight in the quality and appearance of the trees. These are not your corner lot trees that sit for weeks after cutting before they reach your home." The tree sale proceeds benefit the Pasadena Bad Weather Shelter sponsored by Friends in Deed of Pasadena. Trees may also be purchased for donation to a local family through the Pasadena Police PAL program. St. Luke's Episcopal Church seeks once-a-month music coordinator for 10 year Taizé ministry. Familiarity with Taizé music preferable but not critical; however, interest in meditative styles of prayer and music is essential.
