Job support group ministry
begins in Van Nuys St. Mark's Church, Van Nuys is beginning a new ministry for those seeking new opportunities in their work.The Job Support Group provides assistance for those currently seeking employment or considering a change. While not an employment agency, the Job Support Group provides guidance on job hunt strategies, resumes, referrals to networking and other support organizations, and encouragement for what may be a very challenging life experience. In a friendly, noncompetitive environment, each member can share his or her thoughts and suggestions for others to consider. This ministry welcomes all members of the community. The group meets every Monday from 12 noon to 1:30 PM in the chapel. Participants can use St. Mark's WIFI service, so leaders encourage all to bring laptops or tablets. Deanery assemblies begin in Hermosa Beach on Saturday: others scheduled for November
Diocesan Convention will be held on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 - 7 at the Ontario Convention Center. The convention will continue the theme "Seeds of Hope: Serving Together in Abundant Vineyards," introduced at last year's meeting. Deanery Assemblies A series of pre-convention deanery assemblies will begin in Deanery 8 at St. Cross Church, Hermosa Beach, on Saturday, Oct. 26 and continue in November. A bishop and/or a member of the diocesan staff will attend each gathering to present information about the 2014 proposed budget, three resolutions, several proposed changes to the constitution and canons of the diocese, and other matters to come before convention. Christmas tree sale to benefit Pasadena bad-weather shelter
St. Mark's Church, Altadena, will begin its annual Christmas tree sale in early November. Trees may be pre-purchased online or in person at St. Mark's Church Nov. 1 - 17; pickup or delivery (local, with a small additional donation) will be December 7, 8 - 11 a.m. Available trees include Douglas firs (5 to 9 foot), Noble Firs (pictured; 4 to 10 foot) and Grand Firs (5 to 10 foot). They are are cut fresh and delivered to St. Mark's two days later. "They are fragrant, fresh and full," according to a release from the congregation. "We always delight in the quality and appearance of the trees. These are not your corner lot trees that sit for weeks after cutting before they reach your home." The tree sale proceeds benefit the Pasadena Bad Weather Shelter sponsored by Friends in Deed of Pasadena. Trees may also be purchased for donation to a local family through the Pasadena Police PAL program. Hiker to tell of 2,200 miles on the Appalachian Trail Daniel McCarley, 24, pursued a dream this year by spending six months hiking the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. McCarley will tell of his adventures during a special program at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. Stephen's Church, Whittier, his home congregation. In addition to a narrative and photos, McCarley will answer questions, and also will have some of the gear he used on his journey. The public is invited to this program and potluck supper. Peace & Justice film series presents documentary on Nicaraguan girls The Peace & Justice Film Series at Church of the Messiah, Santa Ana, will present "Not All Dreams Have Been Dreamed" (No todos los sue�os han sido so�ados) by Mar�a Jos� �lvarez and Marta Clarissa Hern�ndez at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The film is a short (42 minute) documentary on girls forced to work for a living in Nicaragua. The personalities are vividly presented and captivating. Aside from illustrating conditions in the second-poorest country of the western hemisphere, it is an eloquent evocation of the Nicaraguan landscape and texture of life. Docents will be on hand to bring old tales to life. Cost for materials is $5 and up.
