AIDS ribbon St. Michael's, Corona del Mar, hosts diocesan AIDS Mass
The annual Diocesan AIDS Mass, a service of remembrance for those who have died with AIDS and hope and healing for those who are living with HIV, will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church in Corona del Mar. Bishop Suffragan Mary D. Glasspool will celebrate; George Marks, M.D., will preach the sermon. The diocese's Program Group on HIV/AIDS has sponsored the annual service since the 1980s. The diocesan AIDS quilt will be displayed, and participants will be invited to add the names of loved ones. A reception in the parish hall will follow the service. Members are invited to share memories, dreams in online forum
The Task Force for Re-Imagining the Episcopal Church (TREC) has posted an "Engagement Kit" online and invites Episcopalians throughout the church to contribute their memories, ideas and dreams to the conversation. TREC, created by authority of a unanimous-vote resolution at General Convention 2012, is charged with studying the structures and governance of the Episcopal Church "in a way that best responds to God's call at this moment in our common life, and helps most faithfully live into the church God is calling us to become in the future," according to the Rev. Craig Loya, a member of the task force. The deadline for submitting information is March 14, 2014. Read more here.

30 years of music and ministry
The Episcopal Chorale
Mary Bruno and Chas Cheatham THE EPISCOPAL CHORALE performs at its annual Scholarship Luncheon, held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on Oct. 13 to celebrate its 30th year of making music. In addition to its extensive performances all over the world, the Chorale Society grants scholarships to promising young performers; this year's award recipients included a mezzo-soprano, a violinist, a tenor sax player, two pianists and two dancers, all of whom performed during the event. In addition, the Chorale Society honored its founder and director Canon Charles "Chas" Cheatham and Mary Bruno, community leader and advocate for children (pictured above), as well as Chorale members Lethia Flowers, Dorothy Kelly Gardnery and the Rev. Arthur Broadous. The Chorale has members from Episcopal churches and many churches of other denominations throughout the Los Angeles area.

Convention dinner returns to schedule:
tickets are now available


Diocesan Convention will be held on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 - 7 at the Ontario Convention Center. The convention will continue the theme "Seeds of Hope: Serving Together in Abundant Vineyards," introduced at last year's meeting.

Nominations and other materials due 
Janet Wylie, secretary of Convention, reminds all nominees, delegates, clergy, diocesan staff and others that the deadline for materials to be included in the convention booklet is this Friday,
Oct. 18
.
This includes names of nominees for diocesan office and for clergy or lay deputy to General Convention. Wylie must receive nomination forms by Friday for names to be included on the tally sheet. (Nominations received after that date will be announced at convention.) Nomination forms and instructions for submitting candidate information are on the convention webpage here.

Convention Dinner 
This year's convention will again include a Friday night dinner, featuring elegant entrees: choose from Santa Maria BBQ tri-tip, grilled salmon filet, Greek cheese potato cake (vegetarian) or lobster macaroni & cheese. Dinner will also include a house salad and cappuccino cake. (Diabetic-friendly, gluten-free and other special-needs dinners are available upon request; see the reservation form.) Tickets are now available, and should be ordered as soon as possible. An order form with complete menu choices and all other information is here.

Deanery Assemblies 
A series of pre-convention deanery assemblies will be held in October and November. A bishop and/or a member of the diocesan staff will attend each gathering to present information about the 2014 proposed budget, three resolutions, several proposed changes to the constitution and canons of the diocese, and other matters to come before convention. All parochial clergy and delegates should attend one of the meetings, and all other interested church member are invited to attend.

Prism Restorative Justice, a diocesan ministry that provides chaplains and other services for the incarcerated in county jails and patients in county hospitals, will present "Holy Night,"
a festive fundraiser on Wednesday, Nov. 13,
6 - 9 p.m. at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel. The event will feature a concert by Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist Vijay Gupta (pictured) and "Street Symphony," a group of activist musicians who deliver live classical music to disenfranchised communities in Los Angeles. The event will also include dinner and a silent auction. Tickets are $75 per person, and all proceeds benefit Prism's ministries. CropwalkSt. Stephen's, Santa Clarita, sponsors Cropwalk's 2013 March Against Hunger
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church will sponsor Santa Clarita's community-wide "Crop Walk" project on Sunday, Oct. 27, beginning with sign-ins at 1:30 p.m. The walk begins at 2 p.m. This year's theme is "Ending Hunger One Step at a Time." Crop Walk is an international effort both to raise awareness of the scourge of hunger and solicit donations to help alleviate it. One quarter of donations collected will go to local Santa Clarita Valley anti-hunger efforts, including Family Promise, Church of Hope Food Pantry, Bridge to Home Homeless Shelter and the Fish Program. The remainder will go to areas around the world where hunger is a daily menace to millions of people. To register for the 2.2-mile walk, visit the Cropwalk website. Alternatively, participants may bring non-perishable food items to St. Stephen's on Crop Walk Day (Oct. 27) or make a financial donation to support the organization's efforts. UCLA professor to explore questions about adolescence
All Saints' Church, Beverly Hills, will present a program for parents and grandparents of teens and soon-to-be teens titled "Preparing for Adolescence: What to Expect as Your Kids Progress through the Teenage Years" on Monday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. The speaker is UCLA professor and All Saints' parishioner Dr. Andrew Fuligni. "Descriptions of the adolescent period are typically filled with stereotypes, exaggerations and misconceptions," says Fuligni. "In this presentation, I will discuss key biological, social, and psychological changes that take place during the teenage years that can create both challenges and unique opportunities for growth for adolescents and their families." Nadia Bolz-Weber will be at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Tuesday, October 29, at 7 p.m. to talk about her book Pastrix: The Cranky Beautiful Faith of a Sinner and a Saint. Bolz-Weber is the founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints, an Evangelical Lutheran mission church in Denver, Colorado.      Facsimile grave markers of bygone nobles and royals await visitors, who may create unusual artworks by laying paper over the brass plates and rubbing metallic-color wax sticks over them to capture the embossed images on more than 100 plates representing not only English nobility, but also Mayan, Celtic, Chinese and Indonesian symbols, as well as Hispanic Day of the Dead traditions. Docents will be on hand to bring old tales to life. Cost for materials is $5 and up. During its run, the center will offer traditional English teas, complete with sweets and savories, for groups, at $24 per adult and $14 per child/student.  (Advance reservations are required.)      The parish adult choir, youth groups, guest singers and jazz ensemble will perform this lively, multimedia presentation in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. The performance will include a slide show created by the youth of St. Francis for this spiritual blend of music and praise for all faiths, and lovers of the "blue green hills of Earth." There is no entrance charge, and the public is welcome.  A free-will offering will be received. This is a family-friendly concert, and childcare is available (email to [email protected] for reservations).  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a worthy environmental organization. A reception will follow the service.
