Celebrating St. James the Great Church, Newport Beach, as 'a signpost for all humanity
Los Angeles Bishop Jon Bruno offered a message of love, reconciliation and hope to a full house of worshipers at an Oct. 6 welcome-back celebration of St. James the Great Episcopal Church in Newport Beach.
He also challenged the congregation -- about 280 people from across the diocesan community who gathered for the joyous service -- to support efforts to rebuild the church and to make it a signpost telegraphing the message: "Here we are, Lord. We've come to serve you and we're going to welcome all humanity into your loving arms."
The church, held for nine years by a breakaway group, was returned to the diocese in September following lengthy legal proceedings.
 San Bernardino County clergy,
lay leaders
to join Bishop Bruno in safety forum Oct. 12
San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon has designated Captain Steve Dorsey (pictured) to meet with Episcopal clergy and lay leaders during the Oct. 12 diocesan community safety forum that Bishop Jon Bruno will host at St. John's Church, 1407 N. Arrowhead Ave., San Bernardino. Dorsey will join the bishop in outlining best practices for engaging congregations with local law enforcement agencies to increase community safety and strengthen crisis response.
Set for 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the forum will also highlight resources available through the Diocesan Disaster Response Task Force, as well as initiatives seeking to increase gun safety as a public health priority. The bishop has invited congregations to send teams of at least one clergy person and one layperson who will assist in implementing proactive strategies. All in the diocese are welcome at the forum, which is also open to the public.
The forum will conclude a series of five county-based forums, including last Saturday's Orange County session keynoted by Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and attended by some 60 participants. The series began in August with keynote presentations by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer.
Next steps include related individual consultations with Episcopal congregations in Riverside County and members of the Disaster Response Task Force. Further information is available from the diocesan Community Relations Office, 213.482.2040, ext. 240.

President Obama: What is your spiritual side?

I wonder: how do you handle the daily and endless influx of global and local crises, with apparently limited time for spiritual reflection and personal peace?
I supported you from the start to become the first black president of the U.S. I hope you realize that you've won spectacularly in the fact that, because of your precedence, future years will usher in women presidents, a Latino and Asian chief executive, perhaps a Native American in the White House. Isn't that great? I certainly think so.
