Princess Basma Center UTO Ingathering set for
All Saints Sunday

The annual ingathering of donations for the United Thank Offering will take place on All Saints Sunday, Nov. 3. Episcopalians throughout the church collect coins in their blue boxes to give thanks for the blessings in their lives. All Children at Princess Basma center funds raised in the blue boxes are used to fund grants that support many local and diocesan programs in the Anglican Communion.

The Diocese of Los Angeles has frequently received grants; this year, a grant went to L.A.'s companion Diocese of Jerusalem to for the Princess Basma Center, which offers education and therapy for children and vulnerable adults suffereing from severe disabilities and trauma. For information about UTO and the ingathering, contact Lynn Headley, diocesan UTO coordinator, at 714.963.5932 or lynnheadleygc@earthlink.net. Checks may be sent to her before Dec. 15 (payable to ECW; write UTO in the subject line) at 17671 San Rafael Street, Fountain Valley, CA  92708.

Headley and three other women from the Diocese of Los Angeles recently visited the Princess Basma Center during a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. During their tour, they met children who are now able to hear because of cochlear implants they received at the center. The L.A. group presented a specially-commissioned UTO tile to Betty Majaj, recently retired director of the center, and her successor, Ibrahim Faltas. The group also delivered a large box of blankens knitted by women of St. Luke's Church, Alexandria, Virginia, for use by the children of the center.

Henri Nouwen
Retreat to explore the spirituality
of Henri Nouwen
Henri Nouwen, one of the most beloved spiritual teachers of our time, wrote 40 books on the "life of the heart" -- his name for the spiritual life. Nouwen lived a life of continued spiritual experiment and  wrote and spoke of his continued struggles and challenges as a "wounded healer." He reminded readers that each must discover an "inner voice of love" before offering their lives to others. But how can this  "inner voice" be discovered and cultivated in a world mad with aggression, competition and violence? How might one live truly "from the heart" and not the way of the world? Sponsored by Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality, "From the Heart: The Spirituality of Henri Nouwen," 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 at All Saints Church, Pasadena, is an interactive retreat day that includes prayer, conversation, and a short video on Nouwen's life. The Rev. Chris Glaser of Atlanta will share his intimate knowledge of Nouwen's life and work as his friend. Glaser is the author of more than 12 books on the spiritual life, including Henri's Mantle: 100 Meditations on the Nouwen Legacy. Glaser's own journey as one of the first gay men to seek ordination in modern organized religion inspired Nouwen and thousands of others in the struggle for justice. Books and lunch will be available.  Early registration is strongly recommended. For more information and to register, click here. All Saints Church is located at 132 N. Euclid Avenue, Pasadena 91101.
