The sound of peace:
Korean bell dedicated at Good Samaritan Hospital

Blessing of the Peace Bell at Good Samaritan Hospital
Surrounded by members of Los Angeles' Korean community, Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce blesses and dedicates the new Friendship and Peace Bell at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles on Aug. 14. The bell symbolizes a year-long companion relationship between Good Samaritan, founded by an Episcopal nun in 1885, and Severance Hospital in Seoul, Korea, founded by a medical missionary in the same year. Good Samaritan is located in an area of Los Angeles with a large Korean population; a majority of its patients and 90 of its doctors are of Korean origin or ancestry.  The bell was sculpted by Kwangshik Won, a renowned Korean artist, and contains soil from the United States and from North Korea and South Korea, according to the Rev. Aidan Koh of St. James' Church, Los Angeles. Historically, the two hospitals received major donations from philanthropists of the same name - Mrs. Mark Severance to Good Samaritan in 1886 and Louis H. Severance of Ohio, treasurer of Standard Oil, in 1900 - though it is unclear whether the two donors were related to each other.

Suggested donation is $10 per person. A description of the series follows: "Do you have a desire to follow Christ's invitation to love, but wonder what this means practically? What do we do when we have been wounded by another, when there are serious injustices in the world, or when, try as we might, we just can't forgive?  How, exactly, do we become a people who love God and others as ourselves?  This fall we will look at these issues within a framework of radical compassion, for ourselves and others.  This class will involve both instruction and practice, and at the end of the class you will have specific tools for engaging with these important questions above.  Come...join us as we seek to learn how to follow the invitation Jesus offers us, and experience a love for ourselves and other that flows from God's own love for us all."
