Santa Barbara-area Congresswoman
Lois Capps to address community
safety forum on Aug. 17
Congresswoman Lois Capps, representing the Central Coast area of California, will be the opening speaker at the Hands in Healing community safety forum Aug. 17 at St. Michael's University Church in Isla Vista.

The forum is one of a series hosted by Bishop J. Jon Bruno to address problems of violence in cities and communities. Similar county-based forums are set for Aug. 10 in Los Angeles, Aug. 24 in Ventura, Sept. 14 in Riverside, Oct. 5 in Laguna Hills and Oct. 12 in San Bernardino. Bruno is scheduled to attend all six forums; congregations are asked to send a team of at least two people, clergy and lay, to one of the forums. (A complete schedule is here.) According to her website, Capps has been a resident of Santa Barbara since 1963. Her congressional district, which she has served since 1998,  includes San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, and a portion of Ventura County. She is a registered nurse with 20 years of experience, and has worked in Congess for "better schools, quality health care, and a cleaner environment," as well as public health issues. She serves on the House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, and sits on the Health, Energy & Power and Environment & the Economy subcommittees. She has been an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Santa Barbara since 1964.

Mary Glasspool at Dodger Stadium Dodger Night deadline looms
The Diocese of Los Angeles will have its annual Episcopal Night at Dodger Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30. The game, pitting the Dodgers against the San Diego Padres, will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude with fireworks. Bishop Mary Glasspool will throw out the first pitch. Tickets are $15 each: every person over the age of 4 needs a ticket. The ticket deadline is imminent: contact your congregation's Dodger Night coordinator, or the Rev. Canon Greg Larkin, diocesan coordinator, at greg.larkin@stcolumbaca.com as soon as possible.

Urban intern class ends year of service
Urban Interns 2013
The 2012-2013 class of young people participating in the Episcopal Urban Intern Project in Los Angeles completed its year of service with a recent final retreat. EUIP is a church-wide program, administered in the Diocese of Los Angeles through the Jubilee Consortium, a group of inner-city Episcopal congregations that works for meaningful social change. Member churches are Holy Faith Church, Inglewood; St. Luke's Church, Long Beach; St. Stephen's Church, Hollywood; and St. James in the City Church, Los Angeles. Partner congregations are All Saints Church, Highland Park; Saint George's Church, Hawthorne; Trinity Church, East Hollywood; and Saint John's ProCathedral, Los Angeles. The interns work at a variety of schools, clinics, food pantries, learning centers and other ministries, including IRIS (Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Service), and diocesan institutions Hillsides and Neighborhood Youth Association. They will start their ministry assignments on Aug. 12.

Susan Bek New rector at Ventura parish
Bishop Suffragan Mary D. Glasspool will install the Rev. Susan Bek as rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ventura, at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31. Dinner in Kahler Hall will follow the service. Holy Trinity, Covina
Covina parish announces celebration of new Spanish-language ministry
La Celebración del Traslado de la Imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y la Misa festiva
Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will celebrate the formal dedication and institution of a new Spanish ministry on Saturday, August 17. At 5:30 p.m. the congregation will ceremoniously commence the translation of the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe from the former St. Martha's Episcopal Church (520 S. Lark Ellen Avenue, West Covina) to Holy Trinity, beginning with a caravan by car from St. Martha's to Covina Park, 301 N. Fourth Avenue, Covina. A walking procession will begin at Covina Park and proceed to Holy Trinity Church, located at West Badillo Street and Valencia Place. To join the procession, gather at the park at 5:45 p.m.; upon arrival of the Virgin of Guadalupe image, mariachis will lead the procession to Holy Trinity's chapel, which will then be renamed La Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (at about 6 p.m.) A fiesta with Mexican food and music will follow in the church courtyard. Enrollment is open at Compton day school
St. Timothy's Episcopal Day School in Compton has opened enrollment for the 2013-14 school year. St. Timothy's offers classes in preschool through eighth grade; enrolled students are eligible for free after-school child care. The fall semester will begin on Aug. 26. St. Paul's, Tustin, Louisiana Bayou Tustin garden party will travel in spirit to Louisiana bayou
St. Paul's Church, Tustin, will present its annual "Taste of St. Paul's" dinner-dance event, titled "Louisiana Bayou Garden Party," on Saturday, August 24, 6 p.m. in the courtyard of the church. Prison protest Prayer vigil to express support for prison hunger strikers
An interfaith prayer service and vigil in solidarity with inmates in the California prison system who are on a hunger strike for the end of extended solitary confinement housing will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, Aug. 8 at the State Office Building, 300 S. Spring Street in Los Angeles. The event, which will mark the fourth week of the hunger strike, is sponsored by a broad coalition of California religious and secular peace and justice organizations. ICUJP honorees ICUJP to honor three
with peacemaker award

ICUJP (Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace) invites the diocesan community to its 2013 Regas Courageous Peacemaker Award program on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Agape International Spiritual Center, 5700 Buckingham Parkway, Culver City 90230. The event will honor:
  • Rabbi Leonard Beerman, a founder of Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles;
  • Maher M. Hathout, senior advisor of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC);
  • Eisha Mason, associate regional director, West Region, American Friends Service Committee in the Pacific Southwest.
The free program, which will begin at 7 p.m., will feature a sharing and discussion with the three honorees, moderated by ICUJP founder the Rev. Canon George Regas, retired rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena. A ticketed reception will begin at 5 p.m. and will feature catered hors d'oeuvres, a gift bag, discussion and a short program, with reserved seating for the following evening program. Calling singers: St. Athanasius' congregation to re-launch choir
After several years without an adult choir for English-language Sunday services at the Cathedral Center, the Congregations of St. Athanasius is re-starting its choir in order to resume its history of high quality choral music. Under the direction of organist/choirmaster James French, rehearsals will begin on Thursday, August 15 at 7 p.m. in the church and continue to take place on Thursdays at 7 p.m. until further notice. Christ Church, Redondo Beach Bone marrow drive and art show come to Redondo Beach
Christ Church in Redondo Beach will hold a three-day Bone Marrow Drive, along with an Art Show and Sale, on Friday, Sept. 6 (6 - 9 p.m.), Saturday, Sept. 7 (12 noon - 5 p.m.), and Sunday, Sept. 8, 12 noon - 4 p.m. Artists will contribute 25% of their sales to help pay for the cost of doing bone marrow swabs; those tested do not have to pay. The drive is conducted by Be the Match. Potential donors must be in good health and between the ages of 18 and 44. Results will be placed in a worldwide bone marrow matching system. St. Stephen's, Santa Clarita Backpack blessing will launch school season in Santa Clarita
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Santa Clarita will hold its annual "Blessing of the Backpacks" back-to-school event at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 10. The blessing service will include Holy Eucharist. Students of all ages are invited to bring their school backpacks to be blessed by the Rev. Kelly O'Connell, rector. A free reception featuring hot dogs and ice cream sundaes will follow in Spurling Hall for all participants. St. Peter's Church, San Pedro, invites over-21 members of the diocesan community to "Martini Madness" on Sunday, Aug. 11, 4 - 7 p.m., at Bell's Bar, 3527 Mulldae Avenue, San Pedro 90732. There will be numerous martini choices, including one selected by the event committee as "The Official St. Peter's Martini" (contents to be revealed at the event). Wine, soft drinks and water will also be available. Hot and cold hors d'oeuvres to appeal to every palate -- carnivore, vegetarian or vegan -- will be offered, as well as decadent and delicious desserts. Saints Aelred & Hildegard Episcopal group will take part
in OC Pride event

The St. Aelred & St. Hildegard LGBT ministry, which serves several Orange County Episcopal churches, will have a booth at the one-day OC Pride event on August 10, to be held on Fourth Street between Broadway and Ross streets. Their presence is sponsored by the diocesan Program Group on LGBT Ministries, St. Paul's Church, Tustin, and individual donations. The Episcopal Church is the only denomination with an official presence at the pride events. Church members are invited to come by the booth and visit between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

     Renewal is a feature-length documentary by American filmmakers Marty Ostrow and Terry Kay Rockefeller that profiles eight different faith groups addressing different environmental concerns. The evening's program will also feature "Electronic Wasteland," a 60 Minutes segment about the dumping of electronic waste from the United States in the town of Guiyu, China. Sabrina van Engelen, who has spearheaded the Green Team at Messiah, will present the films and lead a discussion of the issues they raise.

We're gay -- and we just got married!

Eight people gathered in the living room of our house in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles for the ceremony. Earlier, on May 16, 2004, our union had been blessed by Bishop Jon Bruno, the first time a sitting bishop in the Episcopal Church had done so. It was a huge event. So this time we simply asked a few friends to visit our home for the civil ceremony. It was indicative of changing marriage laws deeply affecting gay relations.
