Ventura parish plants 'seeds of hope' for local kids

Worm Diet
Squash St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ventura, invited local elementary school children to explore the wonders of its fruit and vegetable garden on Monday mornings in July. The "Garden Party" began in the children's library at 9 a.m. with a story related to gardening and growing food, followed by some hands-on fun and work in the garden. One week the children learned about the importance of feeding plants through composting, including composting with worms. After using a magnifying glass to examine live composting worms, the children helped dig worm compost into the soil around the plants in the garden. The sessions concluded with healthy snacks, some of them incorporating produce from the garden. Most of the fruits and vegetables from the garden are shared with a local food bank to feed the hungry in the Ventura community. including some of the produce from the garden when available. The produce is also shared with a local food bank to feed the hungry in the community. For more information, contact the parish office at 805.643-5033 or [email protected].

Trayvon Martin is history,
but I wish he were still here

"African Americans are not only angry about the decision, they're angry about the context which produced it," said the chair of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton, referring to the controversial acquittal of George Zimmerman, who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African American teenager. May I say it isn't only African Americans who are "angry" and expressing outrage and sadness. This is not simply a "black" cause. It is clearly a "human" one, a "moral" one, a "universal" one.
