PrismKeeping kids out of jail; Coalition advances community conferencing model
Police, courts, schools, agencies, nonprofit organizations and faith groups in Los Angeles have formed a coalition to help young people in city schools improve their lives and avoid becoming inmates of the prison system through a "community conferencing" model in which people involved in a dispute or incident come together with facilitators to talk things through. Prism, the diocese's restorative justice ministry, which provides chaplains in L.A. County jails and schools, an active member of this collaborative effort, will host an informational conference, titled "Transformative Justice in Schools," at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90026. Conference panel participants will include Donna Quigley Groman, Superior Court judge;  Ruth S. Cusick, staff attorney for the Children's Rights Project.; and Schoene Mahmood, restorative justice specialist for Loyola Marymount University's Restorative Justice Project. Other partners include the Los Angeles Schools police department, the Los Angeles County Superior Court, and several agencies and faith-based organizations. "We invite all those interested in restorative justice measures for youth in our schools to attend this important informational conference," says the Rev. Dennis Gibbs, executive director of Prism. We need representatives from faith-based communities who are interested in being trained as participants in the community conferencing model that will be used." A video on the community conference approach to restorative justice in schools is here; more information is here. For information about the Aug. 7 event, contact Gibbs at 626.703.4474 or dgibbs@ladiocese.org.

Life-Sized Clue, 2013
The Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries brought young people from around the diocese together at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul on July 20 for a life-sized version of the board game "Clue." At top: PGYM chair Shawn Evelyn, left, explains the rules to teams representing St. James' Church, South Pasadena; St. Andrew's Church, Fullerton; St. John's ProCathedral, Los Angeles; St. Athanasius' Congregation, Los Angeles; St. Wilfrid of York Church, Huntington Beach; and St. Francis' Church, Simi Valley. Clergy, diocesan staff and PGYM members played the roles of Clue suspects; Shawn Evelyn as "Andre the Butler" (master of ceremonies); Frank Alton, priest-in-charge of St. Athanasius, as "Mr. Green"; Rachel O'Connell of St. Wilfrid's as "Mrs. White"; .Alex Smith of All Saints' Church, Santa Barbara, as "Miss Peacock"; Bishop J. Jon Bruno as "Professor Plum"; Executive for Operations David Tumilty as "Colonel Mustard"; and the culprit, "Miss Scarlett," portrayed by Kelli Grace Kurtz, vicar of St. John's Church, La Verne. Bishop Bruno matched the PGYM's offered prize so that St. Wilfrid's and St. James'- both of which had members on the winning team (pictured below with Bruno) - received $1,000 for youth ministry or pilgrimage.

Trayvon Martin is history,
but I wish he were still here

"African Americans are not only angry about the decision, they're angry about the context which produced it," said the chair of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton, referring to the controversial acquittal of George Zimmerman, who fatally shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African American teenager. May I say it isn't only African Americans who are "angry" and expressing outrage and sadness. This is not simply a "black" cause. It is clearly a "human" one, a "moral" one, a "universal" one.
