Nancy Jenkins, longtime Whittier lay leader, dies at 95
Nancy Garrett Jenkins, 95, died peacefully on June 26 in Whittier where her late husband, the Rev. Canon Albert E. Jenkins was for 27 years rector of St. Matthias' Church. Nancy served the parish for many of those same years as organist-choirmaster. Her composition of an original folk mass was performed widely in the Diocese of Los Angeles, and she was also an accomplished poet, writer, gardener, storyteller, animal lover, and friend to many. Parishioners of St. Matthias have described Nancy as "the rudder that guided St. Matthias" for the past five decades. Nancy and Al were married in 1946 at All Saints Church, Pasadena, where she was organist at the time. Born in Pasadena on April 30, 1918, to the late John and Rebecque Garrett, Nancy graduated from high school at age 16 and attended Occidental College, from which she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She then began her professional career as an elementary school teacher in Burbank. Long active in peace ministries, Nancy and Al led several "Peace Cruise" pilgrimages to the Soviet Union. A memorial service for Nancy was held July 13 at St. Matthias, to which memorial contributions may be made at her request.

Betty Jones, widow of former Westwood rector, 89
Elizabeth (Betty) Shepard Jones -- widow of the late Rev. R. Parker Jones, rector of St. Alban's Church in Westwood for 25 years -- died May 28. A memorial service was held June 13 at St. Alban's. Surviviors include the Parkers' four children, Susan Jones Murphy, Cornelia Jones Carew, Thomas Shepard Jones, and Raymond Parker Jones Jr., their spouses, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and Betty's sister, Louise Walsh. Born June 1, 1923, in West Hartford, Conn., Betty graduated from Garrison Forest School in Maryland and attended Pine Major College in Massachusetts. During World War II she volunteered as a U.S. Navy WAVE and met her husband. The couple were married in 1946 and moved to Los Angeles. Through the years Betty was a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels and St. John's Hospital, Santa Monica. At the family's request, memorial gifts may be made to St. Alban's Church, or the Los Angeles units of the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Sessions of "Spiritual Journey," an eight-month ecumenical program designed to introduce participants to the history and practices of Christian spirituality, spiritual direction, and personal spiritual discernment, will begin Sept. 14 at locations in West Los Angeles, South Bay, Ventura-north San Fernando Valley, Claremont and Pasadena. A trained facilitator guides members in developing skills in deep listening and inner discernment.  Participants learn about the rich potential of spiritual direction in the lives of men and women." The program consists of seven sessions that meet once each month for six hours.  Each session includes personal exploration, group discussion of assigned readings, and practice in forms of prayer and contemplation. Murder in tall grass:
A civil rights story

I remember as if it were yesterday. I had flown from my home in Detroit to Jackson, Mississippi, for the funeral of Medgar Evers, the African-American civil rights leader who was working as a field secretary for the NAACP in 1963. His assassination shocked the nation. The day of his funeral was hot on the thermometer and even more so in terms of people's feelings. It was incredible that a major confrontation on the city's crowded streets was avoided.
