'Hands in Healing' forums to focus on community safety
All are invited to county-based gatherings
In response to increasing incidents of violence - such as the June shootings at at Santa Monica College, the murder of 20 children and six teachers last November at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, and last year's violence at a Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin - Bishop J. Jon Bruno has called for a series of county-based "Hands in Healing" forums on increasing community safety. "I invite you to join me in participating in these Saturday-morning gatherings, each of which will include panel presentations from local experts," wrote the bishop in a message to clergy and congregations included in the Episcopal News Weekly bulletin insert for July 14. (To download the insert, click here.) "Let us take on a holistic view when considering causes and effects of violence," wrote Bruno, "and let us plan to come together to explore new ways in which God is calling us to be the hands and mind and heart of Jesus in this world."

Bishop is witness as mayor takes oath

L.A.'s 42nd mayor, Eric Garcetti, was sworn into office June 28 in Echo Park during a quiet ceremony at which Los Angeles Bishop J. Jon Bruno gave the invocation and presented the gift of a Bible specially inscribed for the occasion. Bruno held the Bible as Los Angeles City Clerk June Lagmay administered the oath of office to Garcetti, who stood with his wife, Amy Wakeland, and other family members assembled on the park's Bird Island, located across from the Episcopal Cathedral Center. The new mayor requested the bishop's participation as an expression of their longstanding friendship and collegial work, especially in Echo Park, which Garcetti represented as a 12-year City Council member, and where Bruno has been active in ministry since 1985. Re-opened June 15 after a two-year renovation, Echo Park was chosen by Garcetti for the swearing-in that preceded the June 30 ceremonial inaugural celebration at City Hall. Garcetti, who is L.A.'s first mayor of the Jewish faith, is skilled in interreligious cooperation and familiar with the ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles as a 1988 graduate of one of its most longstanding institutions, the Harvard-Westlake School. As the Echo Park ceremony concluded, the Cathedral Center carillon rang the Angelus after striking 6 p.m.

Bud Williams retires as director of The Gooden Center
The Gooden Center honored the Rev. Ernest "Bud" Williams at a June 29 gala as he retired after 21 years as its executive director. Speakers at the retirement event at the University Club in Pasadena were Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool of the Diocese of Los Angeles and Gooden advisory council co-chair John Cushman. David Hochman, also a council co-chair, was master of ceremonies. Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca presented Williams with a commendation, and Williams introduced his successor, M. David "Mick" Meagher. Mike Horner and Tom Bernard, who were members of the board that hired Williams in 1992, closed the evening with the traditional Serenity Prayer. During his 21 years as director, Williams oversaw considerable growth in the center from its beginnings as Bishop Gooden Home, established in 1962 by Bishop Suffragan Robert Gooden to provide a safe place for local professional men to live while they worked through the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Gooden Center, which now provides a full spectrum of care including residential and outpatient treatment is an institution of the diocese. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012.

Murder in tall grass: A civil rights story
I remember as if it were yesterday. I had flown from my home in Detroit to Jackson, Mississippi, for the funeral of Medgar Evers, the African-American civil rights leader who was working as a field secretary for the NAACP in 1963. His assassination shocked the nation. The day of his funeral was hot on the thermometer and even more so in terms of people's feelings. It was incredible that a major confrontation on the city's crowded streets was avoided.
