News from the President I'm delighted to announce that the 2015 HSA Members' Anthology, "A Splash of Water," is all finished and ready to be mailed to members. Expect to receive your free copy in the mail in the first two weeks of November. This year's editor, Catherine J. S. Lee, has done an excellent job in her selection of haiku, in the book's unique thematic arrangement (based on forms of water), and in the overall design and attractive cover. I'm sure that you'll agree with me, when you receive your copy, that this year's anthology is a real treasure.
As we did with last year's anthology, we've made the book available as a print-on-demand paperback, just in time for your Christmas shopping. The book is priced at a mere $6.00 a copy. If you order copies from the CreateSpace store, $2.56 of royalties will flow directly into the HSA bank account. If you order it through Amazon.com, only $1.36 goes into the HSA coffers. You can take a sneak peek at the cover on both websites and, if you like, order a copy or two (or ten!):
Leroy Kanterman
We have been informed by a family friend that Leroy Kanterman, a long-time member and loyal supporter of HSA, has died. As you may know, Leroy has been providing the cash award for the first-place winners of our annual HSA Merit Book Awards, in honor of his late wife Mildred. The Executive Committee has decided to rename this award for the first place book, "The Leroy and Mildred Kanterman Memorial Award."
Elections
The secure link to online voting, courtesy of ElectionBuddy, should have been e-mailed to all members on November 1st. I hope that you saw the message, clicked the link, and voted. If you didn't receive the message from ElectionBuddy, check your Spam folder for November 1st. If it's not there, let me know. I can have ElectionBuddy re-send the ballot--but, of course, only one vote per email address will be counted!
Voting will continue until Wednesday, November 25th, midnight Pacific Time. This is an important election, with a contested race for Frogpond editor and several amendments to our by-laws recommended by the Executive Committee. I won't repeat all the details here. If you'd like to look them over, see last month's e-bulletin, archived on the HSA website:
The fifth proposed amendment, mentioned as a "possible" addition to the ballot in last month's e-bulletin, was recently approved by the EC, so it will be on the ballot. Specifically, it proposes that the HSA discontinue the distribution of our membership list as a membership benefit. We believe that in this digital age it's too easy for these listings to be copied, distributed, and used in the wrong way by anyone on the planet. Therefore, in the interest of member privacy and safety, the EC presents this amendment for your consideration.

the unfinished poem
Jocelyne Villeneuve (1941-1998) was a haiku pioneer in French Canada. With The Unfinished Poem, Mike Montreuil offers readers his selection and translation of French and English haiku from all four of Villeneuve's collections - La saison des papillons [The Butterfly Season] (d. Namaan, 1980), Feuilles volantes [Flying Leaves] (Namaan, 1985); Bagatelles (unpublished, 1989); and Marigolds in Snow (Penumbra P., 1993).
"Thank you, Jocelyne Villeneuve! And thank you as well, Mike Montreuil, for helping us rediscover this great French Canadian haiku poet who left us too early in 1998, at the age of 57. Thankfully, her writings remain for our great enjoyment."
