Dear HSA Members -

I'm happy to announce that the 2014 members' anthology is now available as an e-book for Kindle:

I thank our 1st VP Mike Montreuil for helping with this project. We decided to sell it at a reasonable cost of $1.99, with a 35% royalty on each sale going directly into the HSA coffers.

We could also sell it through Barnes and Noble, in case any of you are Nook readers. Just let me know, and we'll add this option.

As you may already know, our anthology is already available as a print-on-demand (POD) paperback. It can be purchased from Amazon.com or from CreateSpace. Our royalty is slightly larger if you purchase it from CreateSpace, but I see that Amazon.com is still selling this $6 book at a discount of 60 cents, so you may want to purchase your extra gift copies from them. In any case, here's where you can buy it from CreateSpace:

To purchase it on Amazon.com, just go to the Amazon website and search for "Take-Out Window."

I'm hoping that all future anthologies will also be perpetually available as PODs and e-books. This not only adds funds to our bank account, it helps promote English haiku by showcasing for the world the wonderful talents of our members.

The Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park presents

Desert Haiku Writing
in
Joshua Tree
National Park

March 7, 2015
at the Black Rock Visitor's Center
9 am to 4 pm.

$70  ($60 for Joshua Tree National Park Association Members).  Includes admission to Joshua Tree National Park.

Joshua Tree, CA - Spring is coming soon,  and March is an ideal month to visit the Mojave Desert as wildflowers begin to bloom!  Be inspired by the power and beauty of the desert setting to learn how to write haiku as well as other nature-based forms of poetry in this writing-intensive field seminar. Participants will take brief walks and be introduced to the ecologic and cultural/historical richness of the desert at Joshua-Tree-studded Black Rock Campground. In addition to writing haiku that stems from the direct experience of this natural desert wonderland, participants will also be led in writing other short forms of poetry and some short prose stemming from creative writing prompts. This workshop is open to writers of all levels, from beginning to advanced, and is suitable for ages 14+.

The workshop is led by desert poet/writer Ruth Nolan, MFA, Professor of English and Creative Writing at College of the Desert, and poet Deborah P. Kolodji, moderator of the Southern California Haiku Study Group, and California Regional Coordinator for the Haiku Society of America.

Short Description: The Aloe Walk, which is located in the Arboretum kitty corner to the Peacock Caf, is in full bloom, buzzing with bees, and attracting birds.  The Aloe Walk is structured so that walkers can see examples of the 10 types of aloe mentioned in the book, "The Guide to the Aloes of South Africa," by Ben-Erik van Wyk and Gideon Smith. The Arboretum has a collection of 106 different taxa, representing more than 25% of the world's 365 species of aloe, and 50% of the aloe species from South Africa, the country with the most endemic species.  We are planning to meet at the caf, walk the Aloe walk for haiku inspiration as well as other nearby garden areas. We will meet back at the Caf to share the haiku we've written.
