Hello members,
I don't have much news for you, since I included most of what I had to tell you in the recent Ripples that, by now, you should have received. However, I did save one tidbit for this month's e-bulletin.
The HSA has funds to provide 'scholarships' in the form of free memberships to talented poets/scholars of haiku--awards that I believe we should especially grant to students and other talented young people with limited financial resources. These funds have been donated specifically for this purpose. Often these awards are given without fanfare, but I thought that it might be a good idea to announce our most recent award so that:
(A) if you have a student in mind (at any level) who writes haiku, you might be inspired to nominate him or her, and
(B) if you'd like to make a donation to our scholarship fund, that would be most appreciated.
Based on the recommendation of two HSA members, two years of membership have been awarded to Genevieve Bergeson, a college graduate who's now considering her graduate school options.
Genevieve graduated from Principia College in 2012, where she has been a writing tutor the past few years. She became interested in haiku through a friend there and started writing haiku this year. Also an artist, she illustrates stories and does portraits. Originally from Connecticut, Genevieve now resides near St. Louis, Missouri.
I would like to extend to Genevieve a warm welcome to the HSA!
