Healthy Relationship Education with Disconnected Youth

Healthy relationships are important in "all" young people's lives!

Disconnected and vulnerable youth including Runaway Homeless Youth, Pregnant Teens, LGBT, and youth living in low-socioeconomic neighborhoods want to have healthy relationships. What's the best way to help them achieve their dreams?

Join us to see how the healthy relationship education curriculum - Love Notes - is changing attitudes, behaviors and lives of these most vulnerable young people.

Guest speaker Vanessa Mejia will present a successful model of healthy relationship education with disconnected youth in schools, and community centers, as well as a shelter in Brooklyn, NY.

WMHS will be hosting the Family Planning Training in Spring 2016. We complete the following survey by Friday September 4, 2015 to assess the training needs of all Title X staff. The focus of this year's training will be clinical and administrative (front desk/billing). The information is anonymous and will provide WMHS with the information needed to plan the conference and meet the needs of Title X staff.

Established in 1972, Bridgercare provides essential reproductive services and education to more than 15,000 women and men in south central Montana, regardless of their personal circumstances or ability to pay.
 
Job summary:
Bridgercare has an exciting full-time opportunity for a Masters of Social Work to provide quality community education, mental health counselling, and patient education as Bridgercare's Community Outreach Specialist (COS). Our services include a range of reproductive and general health services and education including: Family Planning, Teen Clinic, Reproductive Cancer Screening, Community Education, Mental Health Counselling, and LGBT services.
 
Position Summary:
The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for coordinating and delivering Title X community education and outreach activities and adjunct activities including: clinical and administrative support and mental health services per Bridgercare Protocols to target populations. The Community Outreach Specialist reports to the Executive Director and is under the general supervision of the Executive Director.

Requirements:
*Graduate of an accredited Masters of Social Work program.
*Comparable combination of educational preparation and professional experience will be considered.
*Minimum 2 years' experience in community outreach, public speaking, teaching or community organizing.
*Possesses and can further develop medically accurate, culturally sensitive knowledge base of current reproductive health and justice issues, family planning, human development and sexuality.
*Has a valid MT Driver's License, reliable transportation and motor vehicle insurance as required by the State of Montana.
*Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends approximately 40 - 60 % of the time.
*Ability to travel throughout Bridgercare's service area (Gallatin, Madison, and Park counties), with occasional (several trips / year) travel to Helena, MT, and out of state, for outreach, training and administrative functions.
*Total work time involving travel = about 20 % of the time.

 The Guttmacher Institute's online county Tablemaker allows users to create customized tables with data on contraceptive needs and services in a county or groups of counties. The Tablemaker has been updated to include data for 2013 on:

  • The number of women in need of publicly funded contraceptive services; and
  • The number and percent of women in need who are uninsured.

WOMEN'S DESIRE TO AVOID PREGNANCY STRONGLY LINKED TO CONSISTENCY OF CONTRACEPTIVE USE

New Study Finds Pregnancy Attitude Changes over a Short Period of Time for a Majority of Women

  
Women with a strong desire to avoid pregnancy are significantly more likely to use contraceptives consistently than are women who regard pregnancy avoidance as less important. However, women's attitudes toward pregnancy and, in turn, their contraceptive use can change in a relatively short period of time, according to "Using Longitudinal Data to Understand Changes in Consistent Contraceptive Use," by Rachel K. Jones, of the Guttmacher Institute, et al. While the majority of women studied (82%) had a strong desire to avoid pregnancy at some point during the 18-month study period, just 41% had a consistently strong desire across the entire period, and 53% reported a change in their attitude toward pregnancy.

Sexting and online safety are now some of the leading health concerns adults have for children, an annual poll finds.
  
"The increasing level of concern about Internet safety and sexting that are now ranked even higher than smoking as major childhood health issues really dominates the story this year," poll director Dr. Matthew Davis, a professor of pediatrics and internal medicine in the child health evaluation and research unit at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, said in a university news release.
