Quote of the Week

When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest. The only thing that could spoil a day was people and if you could keep from making engagements, each day had no limits. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.

The Office of Population Affairs (OPA), funder of Title X,  is requesting data on enrollment activities again for the 2014-2015 enrollment period to give us a snapshot of how Title X service sites are continuing to impact national enrollment efforts.

Reporting Period

OPA is requesting enrollment data from each service site for the period of April 1, 2014 through March 31, 2015.

Reporting Process

The data will be submitted online in a Survey Monkey and due to WMHS on Monday, April 20, 2015. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GNN58MG

Enrollment Data Collected

All enrollment activities that occur at a Title X service site should be reported, regardless of funding source. Each service site must submit a separate survey. This includes satellites. Each sub-recipient and satellite clinic must submit a separate survey per clinic.

Trends in Use of LARCs Among Teens Aged 15-19

Vital Signs: Trends in Use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception Among Teens Aged 15-19 Years Seeking
Contraceptive Services - United States, 2005-2013

Lisa Romero, DrPH, Karen Pazol, PhD, Lee Warner, PhD, et al.
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2015;64:1-7

The teen birth rate in the United States has declined during the past 2 decades, and improved contraceptive use has contributed substantially to this decline. However, the use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods by teens remains low, despite their effectiveness, safety, and ease of use. Analysis of 2005-2013 data found that the percentage of teens who used LARC varied widely by state, from 0.7% to 25.8%.

The Talk TED Video
New TED Video Takes a Fresh Look at "The Talk"

In this TED video, sexuality education teacher Al Vernacchio and entrepreneur Cindy Gallop discuss how to talk to young people about sex. Special attention is paid to the pitfalls of allowing media, particularly internet porn, to serve as surrogate sex educators for youth. Vernacchio and Gallop call for a revision of the traditional idea of the "talk" as a one-time event, arguing instead for an ongoing conversation that is open and honest. (BTW: Al will be a keynote and workshop presenter at the 2015 Teenwise conference).

Teen Sex Myths
teens in a squareTeen Sex Myths

Child Trends, through its segment Child Trends Five: Information that Counts, takes on five prominent myths about teens and sexuality, including: everyone's having sex, kids are having sex at younger ages than ever, "hooking up" with casual acquaintances is the norm, teens are bad at using condoms and birth control, and boys just want sex while girls are looking for love. To read a full description of how these popular ideas are more fantasy than fact, click here.

Faith Based Communities and Sex Trafficking Webinar
Faith Based Communities and Sex Trafficking Webinar

According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) , in 2014 one in six endangered runaways were likely sex trafficking victims.  We know that runaways and other children are at greater risk of becoming victims of sex trafficking. Despite the media attention, sex trafficking of minors is still a largely underreported problem nationwide. As faith based representatives, how can you impact communities nationwide to take a stand against this issue? Should we take on more of a proactive approach? What prevention resources can be used and how can all faith based organizations collaborate to strengthen efforts?

Join NCMEC on Tuesday, April 28th from 2:00-3:30 PM (EST) for a virtual panel discussion, "Faith Based Communities and Child Sex Trafficking: What work is being done? What are we missing?" The panel will feature representatives from multi-denominational faith organizations who are sharing their work, challenges, and positive outcomes. The panelists will also dialogue about the gaps in prevention and what needs faith based communities have.

Panelists:

  • Gail Hambleton - Global Peace Foundation
  • Hilary Chester, PhD - US Conference of Catholic Bishops
  • Elyse Dobney & Amanda Blowers, LSW - The Salvation Army
  • Beatrice Kahn - National Council for Jewish Women
