Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

We are very excited to make this year's teenDVmonth the biggest ever! But to do it, we need your help.

Save the Date: February 4, 2014

Start by talking about relationships on February 4 -- for nearly a decade,It's Time to Talk Day has brought together parents, survivors, celebrities, non-profit organizations, corporations and journalists to spread awareness of dating violence. Here's what you can do:

  • Take the It's Time To Talk Day pledge to talk to teens and young people you know about healthy relationships
  • Join thousands of conversations across the country by participating in an It's Time To Talk Day Talk-A-Thon
  • Register for your It's Time To Talk Day toolkit to help have conversations about healthy relationships
  • Host your own It's Time To Talk Day Talk-A-Thon! Add your conversation or event to our map and see where other conversations are happening
  • Become an advocate for ending teen dating violence by joining the Love Is Not Abuse Coalition, which includes thousands of advocates who have made it their mission to bring education and other dating abuse prevention resources to their families and communities.

Get involved in teenDVmonth activities:

  • Join our Thunderclap of the National Respect Announcement - on February 14, our Thunderclap will reach out across all social media platforms to let everyone know that on Valentine's Day, love has many definitions, but abuse isn't one of them. Sign up to make the announcement in front of your class, youth group, across the school intercom and so on.
  • Host your own event and educate family, friends, classmates and more about dating abuse and building healthy relationships
  • Wear orange! On February 11, help spread awareness of dating violence by joining the Facebook event, wearing orange out in public, posting a picture of you sporting the color and blast your social media using the hashtags #teenDVmonth and #RespectWeek2014
  • Download our Respect Week 2014 Guide, written by our National Youth Advisory Board at loveisrespect to help you plan activities during the week
  • Sign up for our teenDVmonth toolkit and get access to resources that will help you, your school, youth group and more raise awareness during teenDVmonth
  • Participate in our Twitter Town Halls on Tuesdays and Webinar Wednesdays

Obama Administration releases plan to improve response, support for human trafficking survivors

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has joined efforts with other federal agencies and private organizations to help improve the support given to survivors of human trafficking as they rebuild their lives.

HHS, along with the Departments of Justice and Homeland
Security and other federal agencies, today released the
Federal Strategic Action Plan on Services for Victims of Human Trafficking in the United States. This plan describes the steps that federal agencies will take to ensure that all victims of human trafficking are identified and have access to the services they need to recover and rebuild their lives.  This includes taking steps to create a victim services network that is comprehensive, trauma-informed, and responsive to the needs of all victims.

"This month we focus on raising awareness of slavery and human trafficking prevention, but we can't stop there. To continue the fight against this unspeakable crime, we must build on the progress we've made to provide services in a manner that respects survivors and strives to integrate their experiences and their voice into the plan," said HHS Deputy Secretary Bill Corr.

The federal partners developed the plan in response to President Obama's call to action in his September 2012 speech at the Clinton Global Initiative, in which he asked federal agencies to develop a plan to strengthen services for victims of modern forms of slavery in the United States.

The plan was released today during a meeting with survivors of human trafficking, reinforcing one of the plan's core values that survivors play a key role in informing effective anti-human trafficking strategies. By incorporating feedback from survivors and collaborating with public and private organizations, the federal partners intend to improve the coordination and scope of support received by victims of human trafficking.

Other events happening this week to observe National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Awareness Month include the launch of the SOAR to Health and Wellness Network, a pilot initiative designed to educate medical and health care providers on how to identify and serve victims of human trafficking.

For more information, including referring cases, accessing resources or training, or receiving help, contact the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) by calling 1-888-373-7888 or texting HELP or INFO to BeFree (233733). NHTRC, operated by a non-government organization, is a national, toll-free hotline, available to answer calls and texts from anywhere in the country, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.

Clinical Toolkit for Adolescent and Young Adult Males
WE'VE LAUNCHED THE PARTNERSHIP FOR MALE YOUTH AND RELEASED THE CLINICAL TOOLKIT FOR ADOLESCENT AND YOUNG ADULT MALES.

We're pleased to announce that last Wednesday, January 22, The Boys Initiative launched the Partnership for Male Youth and the Partnership's Health Provider Toolkit for Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Males. The Partnership will initially be comprised of organizations that worked with The Boys Initiative over the course of the past 18 months to develop the Toolkit. Now that we are moving to the dissemination phase of the Toolkit project we expect that other organizations that have an interest in AYA males will also join the effort.

The Toolkit is an online resource for health care providers who interact with males ages 10-26 and covers nine major health domains. In the next few months the Toolkit material will be adapted to become a resource for parents and AYA males as well.

The Toolkit can be accessed HERE.

Other related materials include the video of the January 22 launch webinar and a brief overview of the project by Dr. Richard S. Pelman, one of the project's steering committee members. The link to the Partnership's YouTube channel, where the materials can be accessed, is HERE.

We are deeply indebted to the many organizations that contributed to this effort and to the 25 members of the project's Advisory Council, in particular Drs. Arik Marcell, David Bell, Art Elster, Richard Pelman, Victor Schwartz, Jason Rafferty and Ms. Judi Siegel for their commitment to the project and hours of work to bring the Toolkit to fruition.
