Greetings!
As we head into 2015, let me please take this opportunity to thank you for being a part of the audience that receives this newsletter along with the "Notes from Ned" that appear in it. I love the chance to connect with you this way. I was thinking how cool it would be if you all could connect with each other, at least a bit. To that end, I am inviting you to send an email to me with comments you'd like me to send along to the readership. Comment on anything. Surprise us. Say what's on your mind about anything, or offer your favorite recipes for a Super Bowl party. Speaking of which, as some of you know, I am a devoted Patriots fan. My family has been season-ticket holders since they day the team hired Bill Parcells decades ago. Our 3 kids have grown up going to Patriot games. Those trips became the highlights of every fall, and we put enormous energy and creativity into the tailgating as well as the flinging of the ball in the parking lot. It was a pure celebration of life--in a sprawling, charcoal-burning, dancing and carousing parking lot full of rabid fans. Now that our kids have all left home--the youngest of our 3 is a Freshman at Trinity--Sue and I may give up our tickets, as we are getting old to go Sundays, and the crowds are, well, crowded.

More important, the book provides an easy-to-follow recipe for teaching yourself to focus in the midst of the workplace chaos."

Q: Dear Dr. Hallowell, how can I maintain focus in the workplace? A: Focus is the balance between right and left brain. Disconnecting from an activity is essential for optimal performance, however, we shouldn't do it too frequently throughout the day. If too frequently, then we are not productive. If too infrequently, then our brains don't re-energize. Ten of my three word tips are included in a review by Fast Company. Here are the first three: 1. Turn It Off - Simply turn them off when you want uninterrupted, focused time. 2. Trust Your Way - You know what works best for you. Follow the routines and processes for producing your best work. 3. Take A Break - Even a sixty second break can do the trick when you are feeling frantic or dazed.

Midterm Panic - Immediate Rescue from Academic TroublesIt's the time of the year when frantic parents and overwhelmed students collide - what can a student do to recover from dipping grades, anxiety and low self-esteem? Rebecca Shafir, speech/language pathologist, developed Emergency Academic Recovery Services (EARS) a fter years of training middle school to college age students on how to ramp up their school performance in ridiculously short periods of time. Often times, the problems center around one's executive functioning -- planning, organizing, initiating, emotional regulation, working memory, inhibition and the ability to shift between tasks and emotional states.
How does EARS work?
The first in-person visit is to get to know your student's helpful traits and past successes, study any recent testing or teacher reports, identify areas of need and set a course for action. Together we create a plan and get to work immediately. Regular follow-up sessions can be in person, by phone or Skype. All that's needed is a supportive parent or caregiver, and a cooperative, trustworthy student who is "change-ready" and eager for a positive approach to solving problems and making new habits. Contact Rebecca for a free inquiry at 978 287 0810 or 978 255 1817.

An Exciting New Book on the Search for Love - Single people are barraged by messages telling them to lose weight, act confident, play hard to get....in other words, fix themselves if they want to find love. This approach doesn't lead to love, it leads to insecurity and game-playing. That's why I want to introduce you to an important new book on the wiser search for love-Deeper Dating: How to Drop The Games of Seduction and Discover the Power of Intimacy, written by Ken Page LCSW. Deeper Dating is a course-in-a-book for everyone who is truly serious about finding love--and it references many of my central ideas in very interesting ways. Here's what I had to say about it:
"A unique and brilliant contribution. Chock full of practical wisdom as well as tender care. Highly recommended."

"For years, I've listened to classical music while writing.... A British rock musician turned scientist of sound...[h]as created music engineered not to engage the listener. Amazingly, if you listen to this music while, say writing, your focus improves significantly. I now swear by it. I am listening to his music as I write these lines. If you want to try it, go to the website, focusatwill.com. I predict you will be as impressed by it as I am." Dr. Hallowell
