Food, family, festivity, football, and fun.  An array of F's.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I have to admit I've been through some tough times of late, as I'm sure some of you have, as well. Do we want to give thanks, or ask for help?

As I reflect on it, of course, the answer is both. Like most people, indeed I would say all people, I need help. But also, like all people, I have more to give thanks for than I usually reckon.

How to Navigate Your Child's School

Navigating schools can be a tough road for any parent. Most families know it's important to be involved in their children's education, but what does 'being involved' actually look like?

A recently released book, THE PARENT BACKPACK FOR KINDERGARTEN THROUGH GRADE 5: How to Support Your Child's Education, End Homework Meltdowns, and Build Parent-Teacher Connections, shows parents how to successfully navigate overburdened schools and communicate with teachers so their kids thrive.

"A sweet, smart, but above all wise and practical book every parent of a young child should own; it's a treasure trove of information and well-sorted advice." Parents' magazine calls it, "...so good, it belongs on every family's shelf." - Dr. Hallowell Read More

Q: Dr. Hallowell, we know you have both ADHD and dyslexia. What got you through your years of schooling?

A: I didn't "get through" Exeter, Harvard, and medical school, I thrived in those environments because, despite that I read slowly, often got sidetracked, thought outside the mainstream, and often wandered off mentally, I always had some project, some subject, some idea, some relationship, some new undertaking I felt excited about. I always dug until I found something, anything, that could combat the tedium of ordinary life.

I believe there is another layer to life, if we will but search it out. This second layer is rich with possibilities and surprises, short on directions and instructions, fraught with chances to fail, but also filled with opportunities to thrive. An abiding devotion to that second level, and a God-given ability to find it, is what propelled me to a joyful and productive life.
I Am a 14 Year Old Boy with ADHD
Matt B.
My name is Matt and I have ADHD.

I am a 14-year-old boy who was diagnosed about three and a half years ago. I was put on medication and continue to take it now. Although the medication helps, it doesn't fully solve all the issues of my ADHD. I still struggle with academics and behavioral problems, but I'm learning to overcome these struggles.

It has taken me three years to finally understand the whole aspect of ADHD. When I read Dr. Hallowell's article, "WHAT'S IT LIKE TO HAVE ADHD?" it really clicked. The article made me realize that I am different, but it also taught me that it is OK to be different.

Dr. Hallowell Quote of the Month:

"You name the profession and I can find someone at the top of it who has this trait. Calling it a disability weighs it entirely on the downside and ignores the upside."
