Greetings!

If you have children, summer is a wonderful time for them to explore new worlds.  Perhaps that's in a book (suggest your son read a book of his choice to you before bed!) or at the local pond, net in hand.  Perhaps your daughter will develop a new videogame, sell lemonade for a good cause or learn to be a lifeguard.

Summer is also perfect for engagement with partners and friends.  Make sure to make time to be together and enjoy the mental health benefits of connection.

This month's newsletter covers how to keep your kids from backsliding over the summer and information about ADHD at work.

A Note from Ned

I've seen a number of my patients, both children and adults, who have benefited from going on a gluten-free diet.  It's not as hard as it sounds, as many stores now carry a full gluten-free section.  I've done it myself, to help me lose weight, and I've lost 20 pounds.  I just made some macaroni salad using rice flour based macaroni, and it was delicious.

I've also seen patients do well on a dairy-free diet.  I'm also doing this myself. For me, cheese has been the most difficult item to give up.  It's worth a try, if you are getting less than perfect results from your current regimen.  Read More Here.

FAQ
Q: I am nervous that the great strides my child has made during the past school year will slip away during the summer.  What recommendations do you have to avoid the "summer slide"?

A: It has been shown that students of all ages and abilities generally do have academic set backs over the summer, unless they actively implement certain strategies. Here are some suggestions, especially geared to the child with ADHD, to build on the progress of this year and prepare for next:
  • Camps - are important for maintaining a schedule, learning new things and building on focus and new skills - including social skills.
  • Board Games -  Strategies and math skills can stay sharp with games like Monopoly.
  • Toys - will help build on creativity and imagination.
  • Reading and writing - Encourage your child to read every day, and maybe incentivize them with a "reward" for each book report they write.
