With terrorism and political unrest almost always in the news recently and with many of us about to start our summer holidays wondering if it is safe to travel, the advice of the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu - *know yourself, know your allies and know your enemy" - still holds true says our Associate Consultant Roger Gomm.
Roger used to be a senior manager within the Metropolitan Police Service and is an expert on Security Planning, Threat Assessment and Crisis Management. He writes regular articles for the journal Crisis Response. See "Terrorism - the threat picture" below to find out what he has to say about safeguarding against possible attacks.
Also see below for a bit more about Sun Tzu and his famous work "The Art of War".
And if you are going away on your summer holidays in the next few weeks, I wish you a very enjoyable holiday and above all a safe trip.

Terrorism - the threat picture
We have included links to Roger's Crisis Response articles in previous newsletters (e.g.see our March and June 2015 Newsletters). These contain much sound advice on how organisations and individuals can prepare for crises and disasters and make themselves much less vulnerable to risks from things such as environmental disasters, terrorist attack, sudden unexpected market changes etc. His article in the May issue considers what motivates the terrorist and how to help mitigate against all potential threats by designing a holistic security management plan that covers four key areas
- Information
- Protective Security
- Response planning
- Security Culture

Sun Tzu and The Art of War
Sun Tzu was an ancient Chinese general, military strategist and philosopher whose work has been continually praised and employed throughout East Asia since its original composition. He is traditionally credited as the author of The Art of War, a widely influential work of military strategy, dating from the 5th century BC, that has affected both Western and Eastern philosophy. During the twentieth century, The Art of War, already long in use in the East, grew in popularity and practical use also in the West. Today in Asia, Europe and America, it continues to influence not only modern warfare but also many competitive endeavours including culture, politics, business and sport.
