| Earlier this year the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) published their 2014 Annual Report, which is not such dry reading as you might think. It is well put together and, as it is about the 25th year of the EFQM, contains quite a lot of interesting historical information.
Have a look on this link if you would like to view the annual report or here for information on the EFQM's history available on their website.
Also see our article above right about the EFQM's annual award scheme.

This is our first Newsletter for a while, as we have been very busy, as well as supporting our customers, in helping The British Quality Foundation (BQF) with there annual awards process for the UK Excellence Award. This is a long standing commitment of ours and demonstrates our firmly held belief that adopting the principles and application of the EFQM Excellence Model makes a significant contributed to success. The assessment process takes place from the beginning of June and runs throughout the whole summer and our associates have supported this process as Lead Assessors for many years, consistently providing more Lead Assessors than any other company, this year being no exception. We also have associates who are recognised by the EFQM (the custodian of the EFQM Excellence Model) as Licensed Advisors and have the largest number of trained Master Assessors of any organisation in the UK. (Master Assessor are experienced assessors who can lead teams, who are then trained by an EFQM process that extends their competencies, particularly in relation to providing forward-looking feedback on the strategic and operational positioning of organisations). I honestly think it is fair to say that, in the practical application of the EFQM Excellence Model in order to achieve real performance improvement, our collective expertise is second to none. Although the 2015 award cycle is now well under way, this is the right time to be thinking about maybe applying for an award in 2016 or later. See our article below on various awards worldwide to get some inspiration. It is interesting that, although there are various major excellence models used across the globe, there are more similarities than differences between them, showing that success through excellence stems again and again from embedding essential key principles throughout your organisation. On a more sombre note, with the appalling shootings in Tunisia fresh in everyone's mind, maybe we need to think about how we would behave if we were involved in something very similar. See our article below about preparing for the unthinkable.

Excellence Awards
Excellence awards are popular across the globe as a way of rigorously assessing all aspects of an organisation's performance. They are also a means of recognising achievement. The awards process involves external assessment and useful feedback from experienced people who have reviewed the performance of a wide range of organisations and have a very good feel for what "best in class" looks like in practice.
Applying for an award provides an excellent opportunity to focus improvement where it will be most effective and to recognise and celebrate those areas where you are doing well. If you are thinking of applying for an award, but feel you need some advice first, do contact us.
Below are four of the best known awards. The UK Excellence Award
The UK Excellence Award, managed by The British Quality Foundation (BQF) is one of the highest accolades any organisation in the UK can achieve. Launched in 1994, it recognises organisations which have demonstrated excellence in all areas of operation, based on assessment against the nine areas of the EFQM Excellence Model,
The awards process begins in January with a workshop for people who wish to apply and assessment takes place during the summer, with a list of finalists published during August and an Awards Ceremony this year on the 15th October.
Click here for information on applying for next year.
The EFQM Excellence Award
The EFQM Excellence Award is designed to recognise Europe's best performing organisations, whether private, public or non-profit. It recognises leading organisations with an indisputable track record of success in turning strategy into action and continuously improving their performance
As with the UK Excellence Award, assessment is based on the EFQM Excellence Model and takes place over the summer, culminating in the announcement of the winner at the EFQM Forum and award ceremony in Brussels, scheduled to take place this year on the 22nd and 23rd October.
The Baldridge Award
The Baldridge Award is the national award of the United States, similar to the UK Excellence Award here. It has a similar timetable and recognises outstanding achievement in seven areas
- leadership
- strategic planning
- customer focus
- measurement, analysis and knowledge management
- workforce focus
- operations focus
- results
This year 26 organisations are applying. For more details, follow this link. The Deming Prize The Deming Prize was established in Japan in 1951 by JUSE (Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers) and is now one of the highest excellence awards in the world. It is named in honour of Dr. Edward Williams Deming, whose teachings helped Japan achieve the reputation for product quality that it enjoys today. There are different application deadlines for overseas (April) and Japanese (June) applicants, but assessment takes place for everyone during the late summer and the award ceremony is in November, this year on the 11th. Use these links to learn more about the Deming Prize process and to see lists of previous winners. Preparing for the unthinkable Ever since the terror attacks on hotels in Mumbai in 2008, this style of attack is happening more and more often with, this year alone, incidents such as the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices and elsewhere in Paris, the killing of tourists in the Bado Museum and, on Friday, the horror on the beach in Sousse, plus attacks near Lyon and in Kuwait on the same day. Unfortunately, it is not unlikely that something similar could happen in the UK and, horrible as it is to think about these things, some foreknowledge on the best way to behave in such an event could prevent panic and save your life. Guidelines produced by the British police advise action termed "Run, Hide, Call" (or sometimes "Run, Hide, Tell"). Our associate Roger Gomm, who used to be a senior manager within the Metropolitan Police Service, is an expert on Security Planning, Threat Assessment and Crisis Management. He has recently written an article for the journal Crisis Response on how to apply the "Run, Hide, Call" advice Follow this link to see the article (page 35 in the actual journal, page 5 in our abbreviated pdf copy)
