We are delighted to congratulate our customer Abellio Greater Anglia on being the first train operating company to gain certification to the ISO 9001 standard for their quality management systems across all their operating sites. Whilst many train operating companies have attained this internationally recognised standard for specific sites, we believe no other has managed to do this across their whole operation. This achievement has been driven by a continuing strong focus within the organisation to manage quality systematically and consistently and at ley hill solutions we are especially proud to have been able to support them in this.
We'd like to say very well done to them and wish them every success for the future.

Annex SL |
|
Annex SL was introduced by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in April 2012, replacing ISO Guide 83 as the guide to follow when developing management system standards. All new or revised management systems standards since then have been developed using an identical high level structure, text and common terms and definitions, as set out in Annex SL. Management system standards that have now adopted the Annex SL structure include the very recently issued ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 (see our article to the right). This is ensuring consistency among future and revised management system standards and making integrated use simpler. It is also making the standards easier to read in order that they can be better understood by users. The common High Level Structure has 10 sections, as follows - 1.Scope 2.Normative references 3.Terms and definitions 4.Context of the organisation 5.Leadership 6.Planning 7.Support 8.Operation 9.Performance evaluation 10.Improvement

| | Our team and guests at the UK Excellence Awards |
As in previous years, we and some of our customers, who included the UK Excellence Award finalist Virgin Trains, had a very enjoyable evening at the UK Excellence Award Ceremony, held by The British Quality Foundation (BQF). The event was held on Thursday 15th October and below is a list of all of this year's winners, with links to more detailed information.
It was very inspiring, as always, to see the standard of the winners and finalists and to understand how much their commitment to the principles and application of the EFQM Excellence Model has contributed to their business success.
In our Newsletter last October we brought you news of the review and redevelopment of the ISO 9001 and 14001 standards .The newly revised versions were launched very recently and our article below outlines the key changes and timescales for migration to the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards..

ISO 9001:2015 & ISO 14001:2015
The long awaited ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 were launched last month. Copies can be obtained from ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
So what does this mean for you?
Firstly, be reassured that, whilst the structure and some content of the requirements have changed (see key changes below), the commercial and organisational benefits of using these standards have, if anything, been enhanced, So, if you are using them already,or thinking of introducing them, you need not fear that their value to your organisation will in any way be eroded by the changes. If anything, it should be enhanced.
Secondly, the changes are less to do with changing the the principles and customer focused benefits on which the requirements were originally based (the Plan, Do, Check, Act principle is, for example, still firmly embedded) and more to do with making all of the management system standards consistent in structure and easier to implement and audit in tandem, as well as being an integral part of
achieving the organisation's strategic goals and a tool for improving performance. So i f you need to migrate from the old to the new standards, it will be more a case of tweaking and developing your current management systems, certainly not one of needing a major overhaul. And you will have until September 2018 to do this (see Migration to the New Standards below).
Additionally, if you are already using more than one management system standard e.g. ISO 9001,together with ISO 14001 or ISO 22301 (the societal security or business continuity management system standard), you will be able to reap the benefits of the newly consistent structure, based on Annex SL,(see our article to the left).
Key Changes
For both standards the structure, terminology and definitions have been changed to ensure consistency in line with Annex SL (see our article to the left).
There have also been specific changes to each standard, with new or changed requirements in the following areas
ISO 9001
- Strategic Quality Management
- Leadership
- Risks and opportunities
- Process approach
- Organisational knowledge
- Documentation
ISO 14001
- Strategic Environmental Management
- Leadership
- Protecting the environment
- Environmental performance
- Lifecycle thinking
- Communication
- Documentation
Migration to the New Standards If you are not already using these standards, but are thinking of introducing them in the future, then you will simply use the current versions as and when you decide to go ahead.
If you are currently using them, but have not applied for certification and currently have no plans of doing so, then you will be able to migrate in your own time. But do bear in mind that most other organisations will have migrated to the new standards before or by September 2018 and if you take longer than this, then you will probably end up with a standard that is not recognised outside of your own organisation.
If you are currently, or planning to be, certified to the old standard, then there is a three year timescale for transition, ending in September 2018. After this time, certification to the old versions of these standards will no longer be valid.and all audits will be to the new standards. The best way to avoid unnecessary cost and reduce any impact on your operational activities is to start planning for the transition now, working back from the planned audit date for your certification or next re-certification. You will need a copy of the new standard, which you can obtain from ISO.
If you would like any help, training, support or advice during your transition, please do not hesitate to contact us..Even if you are still unsure, at this stage, what help, if any, you might need, do get in touch with us. We will be happy to talk it over with you and will only suggest you use our support if we honestly believe you need it.
More Information and Transition Training .
SGS, who are world leaders in the field of inspection, testing and verification, are our training partners and recommended certification body. They have produced useful briefing documents about the changes. Click here for these for ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. Together with SGS, who are also a premier provider of this type of training, we aim to run a course in January 2016, aimed at people already familiar with and/or using the ISO 9001 and/or 14001 standards, This will explain the changes and how to plan transition. The course will be especially relevant to existing ISO 9001 or 14001 Lead Auditors who will receive their transition certificates once attending and passing the test at the end of the training. Contact us if you would like more information about this.
