Congratulations from ley hill solutions!

We are delighted to congratulate One Vision Housing on winning not only the UK Excellence Award itself (UKEA), but also the Achievement Award for Leadership.

One Vision Housing is a not for profit organisation formed in October 2006, following a successful stock transfer from Sefton Council. A Registered Provider of Social Housing with more than 11,500 homes across Sefton, Merseyside, their commitment to excellence has seen them steadily improve in the eyes of their customers and they have won many awards and accolades in recent years, such as the Investors in People Gold Award.

The UKEA, based on assessment against the  EFQM Model, recognises excellence across all parts of an organisation. The Achievement Awards  each recognise achievement in a key area of the Model, in this case exceptional Leadership.

Many congratulations to One Vision Housing

on such well deserved recognition!

Think about it!
The drive for excellence comes from within

A man saw a sculptor making an idol for a temple, whilst nearby lay an identical idol. He asked the sculptor why he needed two statues of the same idol. The sculptor explained only one was needed, but the first got damaged. The man examined the first idol, but could find no damage until the sculptor pointed out a scratch on the nose.

On further enquiry, the man discovered the idol would be installed on a pillar twenty feet high. "Who on earth is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?" he asked. "I will" said the sculptor.

"Excellence" is a drive from inside, not outside. Excellence is not for someone else to notice but for your own satisfaction.

Newsletter - October 2013
_________________________________
Greetings!

On Thursday 17th October I was at the 2013 UK Excellence Awards Ceremony held at the InterContinental Hotel, London, Park Lane and was delighted to see that the winner of the main award - the UK Excellence Award - was a company we had had contact with, as Tom McCormick, one of our people, had led the assessment team.  See our congratulations to them on the left. Over the years ley hill solutions has been involved with many winning organisations and it's great to see them progressing to the highest levels of attainment. Below is a list of all of this year's winners and below left is a short article on the winner of the 2013 EFQM Excellence Award.

You may wish to consider applying for one of these awards yourselves. Based on the  EFQM Excellence model, they are not only a way of rigorously assessing all aspects of your organisation
in order to focus improvement activity and enhance performance, but also a means of recognising achievement. The process involves external assessment and useful feedback from experienced people who have reviewed the performance of a wide range of organisations and have a very good feel for what "best in class" looks like in practice. It provides an excellent opportunity to focus improvement where it will be most effective and to recognise and celebrate those areas where you are doing well, which can enhance employee motivation and morale. If you don't feel ready to go for one of these prestigious national/international awards, you may wish to consider the five-step path to excellence called "Levels of Excellence", which the EFQM offers in Europe and the British Quality Foundation offers in the UK. This provides opportunities for external recognition at lower levels than the national and international awards i.e. "Committed to Excellence" and "Recognised for Excellence". Please contact us if you'd like to know more about any of these awards or require help and support in going for them.

Our Toolkit article this month features ISO 9001, the quality management system standard. As well as outlining the benefits of this particular tool, we also bring you news, in a separate article below, of a new revision to this standard, planned for publication in 2015. This will be of particular interest to those of you already using ISO 9001:2008 or considering implementing it in the future.

Our Toolkit - ISO 9001

Our MayToolkit article covered standards in general. One of the most widely standards is the international standard ISO 9001. This was developed from BS 5750, the British standard used extensively in the UK during the 1970s and 1980s for managing product or service quality. However, it now focuses much more on ensuring the delivery of customer requirements and the continual improvement of the management system, operational processes and procedures used by the organisation. The current standard is ISO9001:2008, but a major revision is planned for release in 2015 - see our article below.

The benefits of ISO 9001 are as follows:

  • Helps the organisation deliver products or services that meet customer needs
  • Encourages employees to deliver high standards
  • Reduces re-work and waste
  • Provides qualitative and quantitative data from audits etc., thus helping to target process improvement
  • Is a logical and important foundation step on the journey to 'best in class'
  • Supports other business models e.g. the EFQM Excellence Model
  • Improves employee confidence, pride and morale
  • Certification gives external recognition to the organisation

However, implementing a management system like ISO 9001 is much more than creating procedures and ticking boxes. It should change the whole culture of the organisation to look at business improvement and ensure that it can strive for excellence in the longer term. A management system such as ISO 9001 should help the organisation to become focused on customer requirements and build the systems and processes that allow quick and easy adaptation in a fast changing world. Implementing ISO 9001 in the correct way can bring nearly all of the above benefits, with or without certification by an external body, but gaining certification by a properly accredited body (see below) brings additional benefits, such as external recognition and additional reassurance for existing and prospective customers.

There are many routes to achieving ISO 9001:2008 certification, but please be aware that in each European Union country there is only one recognised national accreditation body and in the UK this is UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, which has been approved by HM Government. At ley hill solutions we are very experienced in helping and supporting people in the successful implementation of ISO 9001 and we work only with certification bodies accredited to UKAS in the UK or the approved national body in other countrie, to ensure that any system we develop and implement for clients is appropriate for their needs and approved by a recognised body.

Follow the link for the UKAS newsletter on why this matters.

ISO 9001:2015 now being developed

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), who are responsible for many of the international standards in common use (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001), regularly review and update all of their standards to ensure they remain relevant in current times. As part of this process there will be a major revision to ISO 9001 due for final publication towards the end of 2015 (the last, minor, amendment to the Standard having been made in 2008), with a draft version planned towards the end of 2014. The draft will be subject to comment and voting on what should be the final content.

Whilst it is still uncertain exactly what the final revised version of ISO 9001 will look like, we do know that it will follow the harmonised structure, terms and definitions that ISO agreed in 2012 would be used for all management system standards, as defined in their "Annex SL". It will therefore have ten sections, as follows:

  1. Scope
  2. Normative references
  3. Terms and definitions
  4. Context of the organisation
  5. Leadership
  6. Planning
  7. Support
  8. Operation
  9. Performance evaluation
  10. Improvement

As to the specific content of these sections, we will not know what this is until the draft is available, although there is a specific requirement in "Annex SL" that organisations determine the risks that need to be addressed to ensure that their management system can achieve its intended outcomes.

Watch this space for further updates as they become available.

Sincerely,

Graham Hull
