Greetings!
Here at the PMI Educational Foundation, we are committed to equipping community members and youth with the tools they need to leverage project management skills to flourish individually and collectively. In this issue, you'll read about a project manager who is using PMIEF materials to pass on his professional knowledge while assisting a Kenyan community's development efforts. You'll also find one of PMIEF's case studies that illustrates the seamless integration of project management into a Meridian, Idaho (USA) classroom.
Finally, you'll learn about professional development and recognition opportunities for project managers. We encourage you to apply! Deadlines are quickly approaching.
Sincerely,
Your friends at the PMI Educational Foundation

Empowering Success in Kenya Through Project Management
|
"My goal was not for them to become expert project managers, but to understand some of the very basic concepts that they could then apply to their individual endeavors," says Mark Dull, PMP when discussing his volunteer efforts in Bondo, Kenya.
He and his wife have lived in the country for several months over the past two years while working to improve its infrastructure through their volunteerism with InnovativeCommunities.org Foundation, a Canadian nonprofit organization.
In addition to their work in schools and with youth, the couple is particularly involved in a cook stove initiative intended to mitigate Kenya's high consumption of firewood and elevated levels of smoke. This program also helps create jobs for individuals hired to construct the stoves.
Mark used the Nonprofit Resource Network's Project Management Nonprofit Practicum, a PMIEF-funded resource, to lead project management training sessions for the stove initiative and plans to facilitate a similar workshop for a team of Rwanadan visitors. In addition, he taught an empowerment program at a local community center to spur social development rooted in the Triple Constraint model. "Project
management gives them tools to look ahead and not react, but to anticipate problems so they can deal with them," says Mark.
For information about PMIEF resources for nonprofits, such as the PM Nonprofit Practicum that Mark used in Kenya, please visit the humanitarian/nonprofit page of the PMIEF website. |
| Case Study: Integrating PM and Leadership into Existing Classes (Idaho, USA) |
A secondary school teacher incorporated project management into her course, Business Essentials, with the support of school administrators and her local PMI chapter in a program that will be replicated throughout Idaho. Her hands-on activities engaged even the most timid of students. Download this case study here. Last month, we told you about PMIEF's case study from Washington State, where students in Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes are learning project management. You can download the Washington State case study here.
