Day Five: Marked by PATIENCE May 10, 2016

"Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm,
sealed with this inscription:
"The Lord knows those who are His," and,
"Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord
must turn away from wickedness."

MORNING MEDITATION
THE LORD KNOWS THOSE WHO ARE HIS
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."
Empty of the world, sensitive to sin, and gentle towards man, these are the marks of the true Christian heart. But the Christian heart is not a weak and feeble heart, it is strong in its desire and devotion for God. While it suffers constant, relentless attacks to wound it, break it, and divert its affections in another direction, the Christian heart continues to beat to the tune of divine love, and only lives because of the flow of the Saviors blood. Our heart has been transplanted - the heart we carry is not our own; and the call on our heart each day is an earnest desire to be at home with the heavenly Father, where it belongs. The new heart we have been given must be filled with spiritual blessings or it will die. Only when we hunger and thirst after righteousness will we be truly satisfied. "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare" (Isaiah 55:1-2).
The great call of the gospel is "Come!" God invites us to come, and to eat and drink freely of the grace He has provided, so we can find refreshment and rest from our burdens and weariness (Matthew 11:28-30). "I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint" (Jeremiah 31:25). The heavenly Father wants His children to take the benefit of the gospel grace which He has provided at so great a cost; however, He has made the requirement for His provision based on our spiritual hunger and thirst. The hunger and thirst we experience in our physical appetites return frequently each day (at least three times) and needs to be satisfied, and our spiritual appetites are controlled in the same way, but instead requires meals of righteousness to bring satisfaction and fulfillment. "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Our Father will provide the manna that we need to help us do our work each day, if we are willing to come to Him hungry and thirsty for the grace He alone has to give. Only God can fill an empty soul, and we will have the portion of Him that we desire each day. Our heavenly Father desires to fill us with all good things. May we come to Him often, moment by moment and meal-by-meal throughout the day, so He can fill the yearning in our bellies and satisfy our souls. Let us pray for every Christian to earnestly desire to become the "new man" that God has purposed for us to become - a "righteous" man who bears the image of His Son. Praise Him for the nourishment of His Word that He places on our plates each day, for "He has filled the hungry with good things" (Luke 1:53a).

A prayer for patient endurance.
"Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes." (Psalm 112:6-8)

EVENING DEVOTION
EVERYONE WHO CONFESSES THE NAME OF THE LORD MUST TURN AWAY FROM WICKEDNESS AND PURSUE...PATIENCE
The fruit of the Spirit is PATIENCE (Galatians 5:22)
When we are filled with the righteousness of God, His righteousness will flow out of our lives and affect the way we treat others. He has made us a new creation, a new man, that bears the likeness of Jesus Christ and walks in righteousness. We are called to walk as Jesus walked on this earth, sowing seeds of goodness where others sow evil. "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). And He has filled us with His Holy Spirit so that we can live a pure and holy life and respond to others in the same manner as Jesus Christ. "...I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:1-3).
We are blessed if we can keep our appetite for heavenly manna when we are surrounded by so many temptations in this world that war for our taste buds and seek to satisfy our natural carnal desire. The fruit of the Spirit is long-suffering, because only God can provide what we need to courageously endure in the face of so much opposition. The patient, long-suffering believer is one who demonstrates the kindness and gentleness of Jesus, even when they face the most offensive and evil attacks. They are able to stand firm and trust themselves completely to the protection of the Lord, allowing Him to be their advocate and come to their defense. "For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God...To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in His steps...When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly" (1 Peter 2:19, 21, 23). Jesus became man to show us what God expected man to be and how he should act. Jesus provided us the example we are to follow. Let us pray for every member of the body of Christ to be instruments of righteousness and not weapons for evil. May we work together to build others up and not tear each other down; presenting to the world a united front of humility and gentleness, and who waits on God to fight our battles. May we see that our willingness to patiently endure without any thought of retribution in the face of persecution, gives our Lord the opportunity to do His work in other peoples lives. Let us pray that we will trust Him to come to our rescue at the appointed time, but more importantly that He will rescue all those around us who are perishing in their sins. May we be a help, not a hindrance, to their being delivered and saved. Lord, restore to Your church a burden for lost souls. "Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation" (2 Peter 3:15a). "He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" (v.9b).
