"Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm,
sealed with this inscription:
"The Lord knows those who are His," and,
"Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord
must turn away from wickedness."
(2 Timothy 2:19)
Day Three Devotions:

MORNING MEDITATION

THE LORD KNOWS THOSE WHO ARE HIS

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."
- Matthew 5:4

Jesus' came into the world to bless us.  In His sermon on the mount, Jesus spoke to the heart of every person and declared the importance of a righteous character and the blessings it brings to the Christian life.  Poverty of spirit is the first of the Christian graces, because all the others are built upon the foundation of humility.  Only in our low estate can God can begin His kingdom building work.  We have to first be brought to the end of ourselves, so that He can be all.  He then declared the blessedness of those who mourn.  The Christian life is filled with suffering and trials, but this keeps us humble and sensitive to the condition of the people around us and aware of their helpless, hopeless, and lost state, so that we can comfort them, help bear their burdens, and lead them to Jesus Christ.

There is an inward satisfaction that comes to those who trust in God.  The Lord wants believers to be utterly dependent upon Him, the all-sufficient One, and not on themselves. Our attitude toward ourselves is to be very little in our own eyes, so that Christ can be preeminent.  The distinguishing mark of the true believer is one who mourns over sin.  A mourner lives a life of repentance and is aware of their sin and the sins of others; their sorrow is over the wickedness of sin and the destruction it brings to peoples' lives.  When we take on God's heart we are filled with godly sorrow for sin, sympathy for others, and compassion for the lost. "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death" (2 Corinthians 7:10).  The blessings that come to those who mourn is eternal comfort for their souls.  Those who mourn over sin are blessed with joy and satisfaction in their heart.  "Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.  He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him" (Psalm 126:5-6).  The harvest of our righteousness brings joy.  Let us pray for the eyes of God's people to be opened to God's perspective on sin, and begin to weep and mourn over our own sinfulness and the wickedness of sin that is plaguing our land and destroying multitudes of people.

A Prayer for Mother's Day

"...to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion -
to bestow on them a crown of beauty for ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair."
(Isaiah 61:3a)

A special note:

In the weeks leading up to the start of our 40 day prayer and fasting journey this year I attended the funeral of the son of one of my dear friends from California, who had been accidentally killed by a gun-shot wound.  On the morning of his death, my friend had left her home to participate in a Walk for Life, only to come home and find her son had lost his.  Her painful journey has kept me fervently before the throne of grace pleading for the comfort of God to minister to her and her family's broken heart.  Today's prayer is for all the mother's who have travailed in labor, who have been disappointed because of barrenness and infertility, who have grieved over prodigal children, who have struggled with single parenting, or who have mourned over the death of a child, whether by birth, abortion, suicide, sickness, tragic accident, or natural causes. Our hearts grieve with you who have suffered the deepest and most impossible pain, and pray that on this day that we all are reminded of the joy and privilege our heavenly Father has given us as women to be mother's - whether by the womb or by the heart.  For we have been crowned with the honor of nurturing the world and sharing the tender comfort of the Father's heart. I offer this prayer in honor of my own mother who has had to endure the lasting grief and sorrow of my brother's suicide, and for all the mothers, fathers, siblings, family members and friends who have mourned the loss of someone they have deeply loved.  Through this prayer I pray you will feel our Lord's compassionate love and tender embrace as He holds your wounded heart close to His. "Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him, for He shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between His shoulders" (Deuteronomy 33:12).

EVENING DEVOTION

EVERYONE WHO CONFESSES THE NAME OF THE LORD
MUST TURN AWAY FROM WICKEDNESS
AND PURSUE...JOY

The fruit of the Spirit is JOY
(Galatians 5:22)

Sin is the work of the flesh and cannot produce fruit.  "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Spiritual fruit can only be produced where there is life.  Joy is the fruit of inward peace and sufficiency, and is not affected by outward circumstances.  Our joy comes from the all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ.  Joy is the natural outgrowth of loving dependence upon our heavenly Father; it is produced in an atmosphere of love and brings eternal comfort to our souls.  "Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10).

Spiritual fruit comes from righteous character. Humility and a right attitude towards sin provide the proper soil from which love and joy can grow.  Sin poisons spiritual fruit, therefore it is necessary that we not walk in the flesh, but in the Spirit.  The Christian life is marked by joy.  Happiness is an emotion that is dependent upon outward circumstances, but joy comes from within and is produced by the Holy Spirit.  May we produce fruit in keeping with repentance so we will not be hindered in our Christian walk by sin, but remain always empty and close to the Source of our life and salvation so we can experience greater joy. "You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands..." (Isaiah 55:12).  Let us pray for the spirit of repentance to fall upon the church; and for believers everywhere to begin to walk in the fullness of joy that comes from an intimate and abiding relationship with the Lord. "You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand" (Psalm 16:11).
