"Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of
unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground;
for it is time to seek the LORD, until He comes
and showers righteousness upon you."

Day Thirty Devotions:

MORNING MEDITATION

Glean the Word:  1 Corinthians 4:20-21

Glimpse of Glory: "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power." (v. 20).

One of the necessary inner workings of the kingdom of God is that of spiritual discipline.  Our Good Shepherd calls His followers "sheep" because we are so prone to wander. In the tenderness and love of the Father, He is faithful to provide seasons of refining and refreshment to remind us of our utter dependence upon Him, and to bring us back to the truth where all our security and safety lies.  "The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.  He makes me to lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul" (Psalm 23:1-3a).  Over and over in the New Testament we are warned to be on the watch for false teachers who turn ears away from the truth and turn them aside to myths, which only "promote controversies rather than God's work" (2 Timothy 1:4; 4:4).  Christians who are ignorant of the truths of the Word of God are easily led astray and taken captive by false teachers and false religions.  "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ" (Colossians 2:8)

The religious leaders of Jesus' day held strongly to their traditions and were very "religious" about protecting and promoting them.  Their traditions were man-made, not God-given, and therefore lacked spiritual power. "You hypocrites!  Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:  'These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.  They worship Me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men' " (Matthew 15:7-9). Their traditions were nothing but an outward display of empty, powerless words coming from lips which tickled men's ears, but failed to reach into men's hearts with power, like the Word of God. The apostle Paul declared that "the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power," and all the pretenders would be shown for who they are, because their words hold no saving power or divine influence over the hearts of men.  False teachers rob weak Christians of spiritual power and deprive them of the nourishment and sustaining power of the Word of God. However, God says He will remove their intelligence from their heads, because His Word is not hidden in their hearts.  "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  For it is written:  "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate" (1 Corinthians 1:18-19).  Man's wisdom is weak, but God's Word is powerful.  To mix the wisdom of man with the Word of God is to weaken the message of the gospel and to rob it of its power.  "For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength" (v. 25).  This morning let us pray for the hearts of all God's children to be deeply rooted in the Word of God and in the doctrines of the Christian faith so that our ears will be tuned to discern false teachings which is leading many believers astray.  Let us pray fervently for our pastors and Bible teachers to hold firmly to the teachings of Christ and the full counsel of the Word of God, not adding or subtracting anything that would rob the gospel message of its power; and may God give them a spirit of love and meekness, so that the power of God can be displayed in the lives of men and many lost souls will be brought to Christ.

AFTERNOON DEVOTION

Glean the Word: Ephesians 4:11-16

Gift of Grace: "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Him who is the Head, that is, Christ." (v. 15)

The Lord rebuked the religious leaders of His day for their formal and hypocritical devotion towards God, which lacked God's truth, and His love and concern for others.  He rejected the religious traditions of men, because their hearts were alienated from God and were empty of His love.  Love without truth is hypocrisy.  In vain they worshiped God - their worship was not of the Spirit, therefore it was not in truth, and so it amounted to nothing.  The Lord's great concerns are truth and love. The truth of God is constant, and His work will be done in His way. "For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth" (2 Corinthians 13:8). Without love in our hearts, we easily wander away from God's truth, and then we become subject to God's discipline so we can be restored to the right path.  "...our prayer is for your perfection.  This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority - the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down" (vv. 9b, 10).

As children of one heavenly Father, we share one heart.  Because we share one heart we are to be motivated by love and concern for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.  We should display the tenderness of the Father's heart for the building up of one another, and not for tearing each other apart.  "Why have we fasted, they say, and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?  Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.  Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists.  You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high" (Isaiah 58:3-4).  We belong to one another in the same body, and we need each other, to encourage and edify one another, so that we be deeply rooted in the things of God, growing in the knowledge of Christ, depending on Him more fully, and loving Him more deeply.  This requires that each of us, as members of the body of Christ, be individually healthy, so we will corporately be strong.  We are to use our spiritual gifts and graces for the benefit and blessing of the whole body; in this way the body will grow up towards maturity and be unified in truth and love.  Let us pray today that every believer would recognize the vital role they play in the proper working and functioning of the body of Christ, and the absolute necessity of their feeding on the Word of God as the source and supply of their strength and health, as well as the importance of ministering to other members of the body through the power of the Word.   May we work together as a body to grow up into the Head, which is Christ.  "From Him [Christ] the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work" (Ephesians 4:16).

"Dear friends, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.  It gave me great joy to have some brothers come and tell about your faithfulness to the truth and how you continue to walk in the truth.  I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." (3 John 2-4)

This evening, draw close to the fire and experience the warmth, love and light of Christ as we come boldly before the Throne of Grace and join our hearts together in prayer:
