MORNING MEDITATION
Glean the Word: Deuteronomy 4:1-14
Glimpse of Glory: "Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and revering Him. For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land..." (Deuteronomy 8:6, 7a).
We have already discussed that at the root of all our problems is the problem of sin. And the greatest of our sins is that of unbelief, for, as one commentator noted, "unbelief is a sin against the remedy." How can we expect to be healed, if we will not even admit that we are sick, and believe that the cure for what is killing us actually exists? Any good physician will observe the symptoms their patient is suffering from, and then look back at their medical history to analyze the progression of their patient's illness, before they prescribe the remedy. This is what Moses did in the record of the Book of Deuteronomy. The chosen people of God had gotten off track and were suffering unnecessarily because of their disobedience; it was time to call the people back to God. In order for restoration and rebuilding to be possible, we must first look back to see where we lost our way (see Revelation 2:4-5). When we do, we surely will find the original route we were supposed to take when we came to that fork in the road of indecision and disobedience and listened to that deceptive voice that first led us astray. Edmund Burke said, "Those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat it;" and it has also been said that, "The only thing we learn from history is that we don't learn from history." The Scriptures describe the vicious cycle the Israelites suffered throughout their history, because they didn't learn from their past mistakes: disobedience - discipline - repentance - revival - restoration - repeat!
The stipulations for God's covenant with Israel were simple to understand: Obey My Word, receive My blessings and live! "Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you" (vv. 1-2). The people would enjoy long life, victory over their enemies, and abundance and fruitfulness if they simply listened to His Word and obeyed His Law. God spoke to Israel through His chosen leaders and prophets. They were accustomed to hearing His voice. His instructions to them were clear. Even in reciting the "Shema" each day, the people reminded themselves to hear God and listen to what He commanded them, and to use their own voice to teach God's Word to their children. "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates" (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). They had God's Word constantly on their minds, but it failed to take root in their hearts. Their relationship with God majored in the externals, and minored in the internals. But God promised them that a time was coming when He would write His law on their hearts. "I will put My law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people" (Jeremiah 31:33b).
Obedience is a matter of the heart, therefore it was necessary for God to break up the unplowed soil of our hearts and plant His Word within, so that it could properly govern our lives and transform us from the inside out. The Lord is deeply concerned with the inner life of His children. Jesus gave His life for us, so that He could live within us. He wants our absolute dependence and utter devotion, so that He can come in and take complete possession of His people. May we give our Lord His hearts' desire by taking the time each day to feed His life which lives within us with the spiritual food He has provided - the Bible - and then, not just listen to what He says in His Word, but also obey and do what it says (James 1:22), so that the next generation will have the light of God's Word to guide them every day.
