Message from the CEO

Many people hold misconceptions about weight loss to be true. The key to losing weight and keeping it off is to harness your unique physiology through metabolic analysis and periodized training techniques.
The 5 Common Myths of Weight Loss

Did the holidays leave you with more belly than you had in early November, before all the busy seasonal schedule and treats? If so, you are not alone. This is the busiest time of year for weight loss resolutions. How does 6 weeks of aberrant eating result in weight gain that takes 3 months to lose? The answer is that the change in diet and the missed workouts have conspired to depress your metabolism. When your metabolism is depressed, you burn less calories all day long and it takes a while to rev it back up. This week we look at the 5 most common weight loss myths to help you find the path back to an ideal body weight.

Myth #1: You Need to Weigh Yourself Daily
Truth: The New Science Based Paradigm for Weight Loss is to focus on changing your metabolism, not focusing on your daily body weight. When your metabolism is primed, the weight comes off more easily.

Myth #2: One Size Fits All For Weight Management:
Truth: Everyone's genetic code is unique, so your approach to weight management must be personalized. Metabolic testing unlocks the secrets of YOUR physiology.

Myth #3: I am Genetically Doomed to Be Fat
Truth: You need to exercise and eat right for your genetics to see permanent results.

Myth #4: All Calories are Equal
Truth: The proportion of fat, carbs, and protein in every meal and snack either directs your body to burn calories or store fat. Learn how to eat to increase and improve metabolic efficiency.

Myth # 5: Just Do It!
Truth: There is a right and a wrong way to exercise for weight loss. Don't just do it, do it right.  The intensity, duration, and frequency of your workouts needs to be manipulated in such a way to stimulate your metabolism, not crush it.  It is called periodization training science. It is how we train all of our clients at Phase IV.

Metabolism and Weight Loss

A Resting Metabolic Rate Analysis is the first step, as well as the most important step, to harnessing your unique physiology to boost your metabolism to meet your weight loss goals.

If you are trying to lose weight or just wanting to maintain your body weight as you age, increasing your metabolic rate (the amount of energy expended per day) is the key to sustainable weight loss. Most diet and fitness experts will have you believe that the key to weight loss is burning more calories in harder and harder workouts, and/or by imposing drastically reduced caloric diets. Both approaches are flawed and dangerous to your health. Only a sustainable increase in your daily metabolic rate will achieve permanent weight loss. There are many ways to give your metabolism a boost - including exercising at the right intensity, eating right, and putting on more muscle.

"Aerobic exercise" also known as fat burning exercise is low intensity activity that allows your body to combining oxygen with the nutrients in your body to burn fat as fuel. During aerobic exercise you teach your body to burn fat as the primary energy source. Most sedentary people have a carbohydrate dependent metabolism.  However, fat is a much more efficient fuel providing more energy than carbohydrates per gram.  And who doesn't want to burn more fat?  The best way to achieve ideal body weight is to discover the optimal fat burning exercise intensity and train at that specific heart rate to teach your body to be a "better butter burner". You will be surprised to learn it's a much easier pace than you would think. The only way to accurately arrive at your highest fat burning exercise heart rate is to undergo a VO2 metabolic analysis. This analysis will give you the most productive exercise prescription to achieve your body weight goals.

Additionally, strength training with weights or other forms of resistance will increase muscle mass.  Muscle is more metabolically active than fat; therefore the more lean body mass you have the higher your metabolism will be. Incorporating a sound weight-training plan to your routine will significantly speed up the weight loss process.

On the nutrition side of weight loss, you will need to learn how many calories your body requires a day to survive and function at its best. This number is derived from a test called the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) analysis. RMR analysis provides the number of calories your body burns at rest.

Once you know the total number of calories your body needs to fuel your life and your workouts (the VO2 analysis tells us how many calories are spent in any given workout), you can create a slight calorie deficit each day and begin to achieve permanent weight loss. Some people who have been attempting lose weight for a while subsequently reduce calories vastly below what is needed to run their metabolism. This only serves to bring their metabolism to an idle in a protective mode that makes the body hold onto fat. This is one of the main reasons why they do not lose weight.

Precision metabolic testing will provide a personalized heart rate exercise prescription and your exact caloric needs from which to design your training/nutrition program for optimal results. Because each person's metabolism is unique to his or her personal physiology, Phase IV metabolic analysis is the only way to accurately determine your proper heart rate training zones and exact caloric needs to create permanent weight loss.

"It's my metabolism!"

Sound familiar? If you're carrying some extra pounds (and having a hard time losing them), it's tempting to put the blame on a sluggish metabolism.
But is your metabolism really the reason it's often so hard to lose weight? And, more important, is there anything you can do about it?

What Is Metabolism?
Your metabolism, experts say, involves a complex network of hormones and enzymes that not only convert food into fuel but also affect how efficiently you burn that fuel.

"The process of metabolism establishes the rate at which we burn our calories and, ultimately, how quickly we gain weight or how easily we lose it," says Robert Yanagisawa, MD, director of the Medically Supervised Weight Management Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Of course, not everyone burns calories at the same rate.

Your metabolism is influenced by your age (metabolism naturally slows about 5% per decade after age 40); your sex (men generally burn more calories at rest than women); and proportion of lean body mass (the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate tends to be).  And yes, heredity makes a difference.

Proven Weight Loss Strategies

Keep the Calories Coming

The vast majority of our weight management clients come to us eating too few calories and eating too infrequently to maintain a healthy metabolism. A healthy metabolism keeps burning calories all day. A starved metabolism goes into a sluggish idle, and saves every calorie you consume in a protective mechanism against famine. Eat three balanced meals a day, and three snacks of 100-200 calories each. On the days you exercise, you need additional calories to fuel your workouts and your metabolism.

Low Intensity Exercise Teaches Your Body to Burn Fat, 24/7

While high-intensity workouts may burn more calories, and even more FAT calories, than easy workouts, they don't teach your body to prefer fat as the primary energy source ALL DAY LONG! Walking, easy cycling, swimming, and other low-intensity workouts allow your body to get better at burning fat. This is the key to sustained weight management and better health.

Eat More Protein, Less Carbohydrate

Every meal either directs your body to store those calories as fat, or burn them for energy. When you consume high-carbohydrate meals and snacks, your body releases insulin from the pancreas, which directs your cells to store excess calories as fat. If that meal also contains protein and fat, your insulin response is muted and you have more energy to be active. Secondly, more protein in your diet is beneficial because digesting protein takes more calories than digesting carbohydrates. The result is that the net calorie gain from 100 calories of protein is less than that from consuming 100 calories of carbohydrates.

Drink More Water

Most of us are constantly operating in a dehydrated state. Our body is 90 percent water, and water is essential for nearly all bodily functions.

Consuming too little water slows digestion, and reduces the energy expense associated with digestion. It also slows down the elimination of waste. The more time your food sits in your intestines, the more calories you extract from it. Drink 48-64 ounces of plain water per day.

The Do's and Don'ts of Running

Just because our bodies have evolved to run, does not mean that they are equipped to handle the stress that comes with impoper running technique and damaging mechanics. Learn how to run and train smarter, not harder, with the help of Phase IV

Economy of motion
In the 30 years Robert Forster has practiced sports physical therapy in Santa Monica, Calif., he has treated world record holders, injured athletes and grandmothers recovering from hip surgery.
"Our bodies have evolved to run," said Forster by telephone from London, where he was working with the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team. "Our tree-dwelling ancestors had shorter legs, longer arms and shorter feet. The body actually changed to be effective at running. But we lost our ability to co-opt that economy of motion."
Forster said the current physical capacity of the average Western civilian is about 10 percent of what is possible.
"Some people can run 100 miles in a day," he said.
The most common running mistake he sees involves stride length, or the distance of the foot on the ground.
"Everyone is over striding," he explained. "You want to land under your center of gravity, or as close to it as possible. We tend to take too few steps per minute. Less time on the ground would take care of a lot of problems."
For the runner seeking greater efficiency, Forster prefers a series of running-related drills -  among them arm swings that target the pendulum-like motion and knee-high drills, which he described as prancing "like a Clydesdale horse."

Wallack recommend the best training based on your fitness goals, including strength training, cross training, sprints, yoga, and plenty of rest. Part two goes a step further from other books by addressing the most modern methods of treatment -- including current studies on the amount of rest required, new and controversial surgical operations and injections, the newest and most effective gear, and barefoot/minimalist running as a form of healing. Phase IV Athlete Testimonials
Phase IV Scientific Health and Performance Center and Forster Physical Therapy work with people of all ages and abilities - helping them reach their full genetic potential and achieve injury-free peak performance.  We strive to help everyone accomplish their health and fitness goals, regardless of how far away they may seem. We have helped thousands of athletes meet or beat their goals, and nothing is more rewarding to our team of Exercise Physiologists and Physical Therapists than seeing someone's goals realized.

Here are what some of our clients have to say about their experience at Phase IV and Forster Physical Therapy:
  • "I had this crazy dream of completing a marathon and quickly into my training; I realized I would need help with making this dream a reality. Today, as a marathon finisher, I cannot thank you enough for all the support in making sure my body was ready to hit the pavement for 26.2 miles and cross the finish line injury free.  At mile 21, the middle of a long, curved hill, I found myself looking over and seeing runners dropping like flies with cramped quads, aching calves, and tightened hamstrings. While I may have said these words through tears, I said aloud 'Thank you Ron and thank you Forster Physical Therapy.' If it were not for your expertise, commitment to your patients, and passion for making people feel better than when they walked in, I would have been the person at mile 21 needing the medic.  Thank you again for helping me make my dream a reality - completing a marathon injury-free!"
    -Whitney Gaglio
  •  "After a tough beginning to the cross-country season - full of injuries and health issues, Marina, my 15-year-old daughter, needed someone to put her back together. We were referred to Phase IV and after the initial evaluation, the staff provided Marina with a program that was easy to follow and fit into her high school track schedule. Marina's program included diet, strengthening, stretching, and form. Marina learned to use her heart rate as a guide for her training and ultimately ran injury-free in the 1600m, 800m, and 4X400 relay.  She not only ran her personal best in track but also is leaving track healthy and looking forward to being the newly appointed cross-country team captain in the Fall."
    - Lisa MacDonald - Mother of Marina Praet, 15, Phase IV Athlete and Success Story
  • "Tracy helped me by creating a nutrition and exercise program that allowed me to perform better while racing.  Interestingly, I am running less that I would have on my own and getting better time and placement results.  The prescribed mix of weight training exercises, intervals, recovery, and focus on heart rate has helped me to improve.  I am excited to continue reaching my goals with Phase IV."
    - Nicole Elmes - Finisher of the 2015 "America's Best Half Marathon" with the following finishing times and accomplishments:
    Race total time:  1:47
    Pace: 8:12
Overall place:  389 out of 5021 (top 7%)
Sex place: 113 out of 2576 (top 4%)
    Division (35 - 39) place: 19 out of 444 (top 4%).
